Can You Take Zantac While Pregnant?

Some people get through pregnancy with very little symptoms. They might be feeling a little more tired than usual or just watch their belly grow and that’s the extent of it. For others, they are plagued with symptom after symptom and trying to find relief that’s safe while pregnant is important. Not only because you don’t want to have to suffer through the symptoms for the next 9 / 10 months, but you want to make sure you are doing what you can for baby’s health too. Heartburn is one of the worst and wondering can you take Zantac while pregnant should not leave you suffering.

Can You Take Zantac While Pregnant?

According to the American Pregnancy Association, heartburn during pregnancy is a pretty common complaint. More common during the third trimester thanks to the size of your uterus pressing up on all the things above it that have been misplaced. It is often described as a burning pain and if you are also dealing with nausea, heartburn can be just the last straw to make you go from uncomfortable to miserable.

If you’ve not had heartburn before, you might wonder if it’s really that big of a deal. But yes, it is. It can be very uncomfortable for many. Despite doing all those home remedies, including eating smaller meals and avoiding fat and spice, heartburn still won’t go away. It likely will have you making a doctor appointment and screaming “Can I take Zantac during pregnancy?!”

So Can You?

Yes, according to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Zantac, or ranitidine, is considered safe to take under doctor’s supervision for pregnancy. They suggest that Zantac or other types of approved medicatio for heartburn be given if changing up lifestyle doesn’t do enough to stop the heartburn.

Fayetteville Woman’s Care also suggests that you can take Zantac during pregnancy as well as other medications for heartburn. These include, “Tums • Mylanta • Maalox • Pepcid • or Tagamet for severe heartburn.”

So, don’t suffer and sit there wondering can I take Zantac while pregnant. Check in with your doctor and tell them you need extra relief. You don’t get a metal for pushing through the awful parts of pregnancy.
