Sometimes science is weird (and sort of rude). But other times, science comes through with some research that makes our dreams come true. This is one of those times! According to a new study, maybe the more important study of all time, drinking two glasses of wine before bed can actually help you lose weight. Yes, you read that right. Having a couple of glasses of wine before bed isn’t just good for helping you unwind. It may actually turn your bad fat into good fat. Wine is so helpful!

Cutting out alcohol is usually part of any weight loss program. It’s the worst part, honestly. I did Whole30 a few times and lord, ditching the booze was rough. And I don’t even drink all that much! But there’s just something about a glass of wine a couple of times a week that is hard to part with, you know? Well now, you may not have to say goodbye to your nightly vino in an effort to lose a few pounds.

Not one but TWO studies confirm that drinking wine before bed can help with weight loss.

According to studies conducted by Washington State University in 2015 and Harvard Medical School in 2016 (as reported in the Daily Mail), red wine contains a polyphenol called reservatrol. Reservatrol turns white fat into active, energy-burning beige fat. The team at WSU found that reservatrol is also an antioxidant found in most fruits. So wine is basically a health food.

During the study, Professor of animal sciences Min Du and visiting scientist Songbo Wang were able to demonstrate that mice fed a diet containing 0.1% of reservatrol were able to change their white fat into beige fat. Du says, “Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won’t be overloaded. They convert white fat into beige fat that burns lipids off as heat helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.”

20,000 women in the Harvard study who drank two glasses of wine a day, meanwhile, were 70% less likely to be overweight. It’s believed that in addition to changing bad fat into good fat, reservatrol can also help suppress your appetite. So two glasses of wine will keep you from heading to the kitchen for a snack!

So, if you enjoy a couple of glasses of wine before bed but feel guilty about the calories, knock it off. Science is here to make it all better.
