Hell Hath No Fury Like Swedish Teens Rioting After Being Labeled Instagram ‘Sluts’

swedenriotWhen confronted with some textbook Internet slut shaming, Swedish teens in the Gothenburg area simply weren’t having it.

The Plusgymnasiet high school students, described as “outraged” by The Local, began to protest in response to a particular Instagram account that made a call for “sluts” in Gothenburg. Over 200 images were consequently uploaded, providing names and “sexual activities” of girls as young as 13 and 14 years old. All images were provided anonymously. The anonymous Instagram account soon began to swell with more followers:

“It grew to 7,000 to 8,000 followers. They were [pictures of] younger siblings of my friends, born around 1997 and upward, that were uploaded,” a 22-year-old Gothenburg resident told Aftonbladet.

A fellow Plusgymnasiet high school student was reportedly “outed” as the owner of the Instagram page — a claim that has not yet been verified by the authorities. Nevertheless, precautions have been taken to protect the 17-year-old girl’s safety following a full on riot at the high school.

After the Instagram account was shut down, other teen girls began throwing allegations on a Facebook page:

Users began naming each other and the comments field was quickly filled with threats of violence.

The young girl identified as the owner of the original Instagram account responded with a comment urging the page be taken down, according to Aftonbladet.

“You who wanted to have a little fun by creating this page should think again. What you do is extremely insulting,” she wrote in a Facebook comment.

“You ought to be ashamed. Erase your ‘little group’ as quickly as possible or else there will be consequences.”

An additional Facebook called for a protest at the high school of the girl who was believed to have established the original Instagram account, and then another. Police showed up at Plusgymnasiet high school at 8:30 in the morning prepared to deal with an estimated 600 teen girls who had pleged to come. And did they ever:

“They’re throwing bottles and stones at the police and attacking passers-by and people driving past,” Västra Götaland police spokesman Björ Blixter told the Aftonbladet newspaper…Certain streets around the school have been blocked off, with horse-mounted police, SWAT teams, and police using city buses to shuttle people away from the scene. One witness to the demonstration told the Aftonbladet newspaper that the situation seemed to be spiraling out of control. “The protesters are kicking down lampposts and jumping on cars,” he told the paper.”They’re going berserk.”

Later that same afternoon, at 1:30 p.m., one police spokesman confessed that the cops weren’t having an easy time of containing the girls. He reportedly told the Aftonbladet that he didn’t “feel like we have control of the situation at the moment.” Plusgymnasiet high school made a plea to other neighboring high schools to “come and get” their students.

The kids then headed to the Nordstan mall in central Gothenburg, continuing to riot and causing holiday shoppers to “take cover” within stores:

“They rushed in and were chasing one another and shouting threats,” one frightened shopper told TT.

Police attempted to break up the rioters with a van parked in one of the mall entrances. A half an hour later, at 2 p.m., the rioters were reported to have calmed down. There has been little damage to the Nordstan mall according to the mall marketing director, but the shopping complex has piled on security for the remainder of the day.

You know, in case somebody else wants to make a call for underage pictures of “slutty” 13-year-olds.
