Pregnant Women Hardly Glow In ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ Trailer

what to expect when you're expecting cameron diazMany films have a tendency to depict pregnancy with the same two-dimension as those silly pregnancy magazines. Women glow and smile and look down at their bellies and birth scenes depict a couple of pushes and a perfectly clean newborn. Anything that attempts to get a little more real, either in the experience of motherhood or labor, quickly crosses into We Need To Talk About Kevin or Rosemary’s Baby territory. Very few films seem to capture anything authentic about motherhood, except perhaps the guilt like in I Don’t Know How She Does It.

But What To Expect When You’re Expecting, a comedy based on the best-selling pregnancy bible, seems to show some promise. The film splices together the lives of five couples who are expecting babies, featuring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Dennis Quaid, and Chris Rock.

Banks plays a renowned and respected parenthood guru who is expecting her first baby. Despite building an empire on breastfeeding and childrearing, Banks’ pregnancy is less than glow-inducing. Yet her miserable pregnancy is further contrasted with that of Skylar, her father-in-law’s much younger trophy wife, played by Decker, who most gorgeously takes to her pregnancy.

Jennifer Lopez’s character is adopting her baby from another part of the world, and her husband takes to a daddy’s group in anticipation of becoming a father. What he encounters is a pack of fathers roaming the playground who aren’t afraid to own up to their slip ups as parents, including finding their baby in the toilet and in the dryer.
