Hey Vanessa Lachey, Gender Prediction Tests Are A Total Mindf*ck

nick lacheyWipeout host Vanessa Lachey and hubby Nick Lachey most famous for being Jessica Simpson‘s ex are expecting their first child together. And let’s just say that Vanessa could not be any more upfront about wanting a boy  even if she tried. “I’m excited either way! But I always wanted a boy 1st,” she Tweeted. And later, “@NickSLachey & I are praying for a healthy baby First & Foremost! I just always envisioned a boy 1st to take care of his siblings” (uh, weird).

There’s something about this woman that totally irks me but hey, at least she’s honest about her gender preference (though her big mistake is admitting it publicly). The part that I can’t get over is how Vanessa bought a prediction test which, as the name suggests, will actually predict the gender of your unborn baby. “I’m such a sucker for this kind of stuff,” she Tweeted alongside a photo of the IntelliGender kit (which, incidentally, looks like it’s straight out of 1979).

I had actually never heard of a gender prediction test and always assumed that if women want to know the gender of their child, they can find out at their 20-week ultrasound (isn’t that how everyone does it?). Turns out these kits exist for those who can’t wait 20 weeks to find out. On the IntelliGender website, it says the test can be performed as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy. All you do is collect a urine sample into a test vessel, give it a swirl and wait a few minutes ’til it turns either orange (girl) or green (boy).

The accuracy rate, it turns out, is a mere 90%. That may sound high but it’s actually not. Because we’re talking about the gender of your child here and well, even a 10% chance that you’re excited (or disappointed) for nothing is huge. Not that the sonogram results are 100% full-proof, either, but at least they’re more accurate. So imagine spending 10 weeks psychologically prepping for a boy, only to be told at 20 weeks that you’re having a girl. Of course, you could end up with either and nobody can know for sure ’til the baby is actually born which is why this whole prediction kit is a mindfuck as far as I’m concerned. Just wait until your 20-week ultrasound, people! At least that’s 99% accurate a big jump over those store-bought kits.

This is all assuming you want to find out the gender of your child in the first place. We asked Mommyish readers last month if they found out the sex of their baby and a whopping 60% did indeed. Many of you claimed to be “planners,” meaning you had to know. That said, one commenter named Frances found out her third child was going to be a girl and guess what? She had a boy. So there you have it. Hopefully Vanessa Lachey is smart enough to figure out it’s not fool-proof. Hmmm…
