5 Attempts To Justify The Murder Of Trayvon Martin With Stereotyping

Trayvon Martin

The Trayvon Martin case is turning in a spectacle of racism, pronounced victim-blaming, and unprofessionalism. While commentators like Geraldo Rivera feel that they are genuinely doing parents a service by telling them what their children can wear,  police officers are sharing other victim-blaming dribble on Facebook. Yet, the attempt to sully the reputation of this young boy is being well documented on ThinkProgress. The website has rounded up what they’re calling “The Smear Campaign Against Trayvon Martin,” citing sources that attempt to illustrate him as black juvenile gangster somehow worthy of his demise.

Blaming his hypothetical violent history, his drug use, or even his physical appearance seem to all be fair game in explaining the death of this 17-year-old. But comments from Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, suggest that the family is aware of these tactics. He said during a press conference:

“Even in death, they are still disrespecting my son, and I feel that that’s a sin.”

Regardless of what Trayvon was wearing, said to his attacker George Zimmerman, or may or may not have been up to at school, he was shot and killed despite being unarmed. But these strategies by several media outlets want to have you thinking otherwise.
