File Under Disturbing: Students Caught Masturbating In Class While Watching Porn

porn in classroomIt’s not exactly shocking that a group of 7th-grade boys would be interested in pornography. And it’s certainly not surprising that they’ve discovered masturbation. That said, what on earth were nine boys thinking when they decided to watch porn on their cell phones and masturbate in the middle of class?! The even bigger question is: What the hell was their teaching doing sitting at his desk, letting it all happen?

First, the details: The alleged incident happened at Bell Middle School in Paradise Hills, San Diego. The nine students, all in seventh grade, were part of a 22-person, all-boys English class (they’ve since been suspended, while the teacher remains). According to written statements by the students, several of them raised their hands to report the behavior, but nothing was done. In fact, the teacher said he’d send the students to the office if he caught them, but then continued reading at his desk (Teacher of the Year!). One student claimed that everything was in plain view had the teacher bothered to glance in the direction of the activity.

”They weren’t even trying to hide it at all,” said one student. ”It really made me and the other students mad that he wouldn’t do anything about the things happening in the class and it was affecting our education and it was nasty, also.” (Yeah, I’d say.)

Of course, this is just one side of the story. District officials are investigating and, for now, they’re not revealing very many details. ”We cannot tell you the reasons for the suspensions, or whether further action is being taken with respect to any particular suspension. With respect to [teacher] Mr. Ed Johnson, all we can tell you is that he is employed by the District and remains assigned to Bell Middle School. His schedule has not changed,” said deputy general counsel for the district Andra Donovan.

Meanwhile, one of the school’s teachers, Hale Maher, said the issue is dividing faculty members. “Our job is to protect children… Many of us are outraged yet we keep silent,” he said.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the teacher and how something like this could be allowed (or at least ignored) in the classroom. Though, with cell phones being such a major issue at most schools, I guess anything is possible. And this particular story is certainly a sign of the times.
