Holiday season is fast approaching, so you know what that means — crazy sales and even crazier crowds. Thanksgiving Day kicks off the holiday season and although the day has been treated throughout history as a day off for spending time with family and being thankful for the things you have, some stores have used it as an opportunity to sell to people who want more. Some major chains have expanded their Black Friday hours into the night before, aka Thanksgiving night. However, there are some who like to stick to tradition and give their staff a day off. Here are all the stores that have confirmed they will be closing on Thanksgiving Day 2019 so far.

TJ Maxx

TJ Maxx will follow its pattern from previous years and close this Thanksgiving Day. Nobody needs bed sheets and affordable designer goods on Thanksgiving Day, not one person, okay? TJ Maxx will re-open again as usual on Friday, November 29th, 2019, so all of your purchasing needs can wait until then. In a statement to BestBlackFriday.com, the company said: “We consider ourselves an Associate-friendly company and we are pleased to give associates the time to enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends.”

Petco

Like TJ Maxx, Petco values its employees and their right to spend the holidays with their friends and families. That means closing on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, so make sure your pet has all of its holiday necessities before November 28th. Here’s Petco’s statement to BestBlackFriday.com: “At Petco, we always strive to provide a great working environment and competitive benefits. This year, we will remain closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day to encourage our employees — we call them partners — to create memorable moments with friends and family.”

Marshalls

Marshalls, the department store that does everything from women’s fashion to accessories and homeware, is also one of the few stores that have confirmed they’re shutting up shop on Thanksgiving. The store is actually owned by TJX, which is the umbrella company that owns TJ Maxx, too. So of course, they’re following their sister company and giving their hardworking employees the day off to be with family. Marshalls will re-open again on November 29th, 2019.

Home Goods

Home Goods may be your go-to for all your Thanksgiving necessities: a new frying pan, some new pots, a big tin to cook your turkey in, you name it. But you better get your holiday essentials in before November 28th, because there’ll be no last-minute trips to Home Goods on Thanksgiving Day. Home Goods is also under TJX, just like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, so we’re assuming the stores will all spend the holiday together. Not funny? That’s okay, we’ll see ourselves out.

Costco

Costco might be the happiest place on earth. You can get your hands on electronics, groceries, household items — you name it! And all of that for a fraction of regular store prices. Amazing. If you’re a Costco member, you’ll know how crazy it gets in their huge warehouses around holiday season — there are screaming babies, screaming parents, and fights over the last 24 pack of beer, the works. You know who has to deal with these issues? The staff. So thankfully, the head honchos at Costco are giving them the day off for Thanksgiving 2019.

Burlington

Is your family the type to sit around on Thanksgiving, eating their weight in food, drinking alcohol together and watching crappy movies? Or, do you like to use the holiday as a “let’s get out of the house” bonding experience on a hike or nature walk? Ours is the former, but if you’ve got an active family and plan to get out and about this Thanksgiving, get into Burlington before November 28th to get your winter coat, because they are CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day. Capeesh?

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware is keeping up appearances for Thanksgiving this year and closing their stores once again. The company released a statement to BestBlackFriday.com and said: “Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the U.S. designed for people to give thanks. As in years past, Ace Hardware stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day so our associates and neighbors can spend time with family and friends to do just that … give thanks. Our local stores will reopen early Friday morning with smoking hot deals on high-quality, locally relevant gifts and Christmas lights available only at Ace.”

BJ’s

BJ’s is another exclusive “members only” wholesaler that knows what’s up when it comes to the staff getting their turkey dinners like most other professionals across America on Thanksgiving Day. BJ’s is down with the kids and knows that, indeed, there is such a thing as online shopping, so you can get your butt to their website if you MUST purchase something on Thanksgiving. They told BestBlackFriday.com: “BJ’s Wholesale Club locations will be closed on Thanksgiving. BJ’s members can seize the savings on BJs.com beginning at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thanksgiving.”

The Container Store

There’s nothing better than storage, so don’t get us wrong — we love a good container. In fact, containers are a must during the holiday season, what with all that extra food you’re going to have lying around. The Container Store is one of the good guys and will shut its stores around America on Thanksgiving Day, so make sure you’ve enough Tupperware, etc. to save your leftovers well in advance. Or, better yet, donate your leftovers to local homeless people/stray animals in your area.

Sierra

Sierra is another store under the TJX umbrella so, like TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls, it too will close its doors everywhere on Thanksgiving Day. Sierra is a little different from its other TJX stores since it’s a bit of a wildcard, as we like to call it. The store is number-one for outdoor recreation, fitness, and adventure gear like clothing and footwear, but it also stocks some homewear items too. Doesn’t matter anyway, it’ll be closed for Thanksgiving.

Stein Mart

Stein Mart is taking a leaf out of BJ’s book and encouraging its loyal customers to flock to their online store on Thanksgiving Day, because if you head to one of their 260 stores on Thanksgiving Day, there’ll be nobody there. They released this statement to BestBlackFriday.com: “Thanksgiving is a time for our associates to be with their families and friends. For customers who would like to shop at Stein Mart on Thanksgiving Day, they can enjoy a great shopping experience at SteinMart.com.”

True Value

Another wholesaler who needs a rest this Thanksgiving is True Value. Along with confirmation that they’re closing this November 28th, they told BestBlackFriday.com: “True Value Company is a hardlines wholesaler. We supply products and services to True Value stores which are all independently owned and operated. True Value does not regulate store hours of operation. However, historically, many stores choose to close on Thanksgiving Day to give their employees and customers the opportunity to enjoy the holiday with their family and friends near and far.”

Academy Sports and Outdoors

If you’re in need of some sports and outdoorsy attire this holiday season, Academy ain’t it, sis. They also released a statement to Best Black Friday about why they close on important holidays and it’s cute AF. Take a look. “This year, Academy Sports + Outdoors will be closed on Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day. As a family-oriented store, Academy Sports + Outdoors keeps its locations closed on Thanksgiving because we believe it is important to provide our team members and customers the opportunity to spend time with family and friends on this important holiday.”

Lowe’s

If you thought Lowe’s was your backup now that you know Home Goods is shut, think again. The retailer has confirmed that they too, will be filling up on turkey this Thanksgiving and won’t be in store to deal with all of your clogged toilet/leaky sink needs. However, the staff won’t be going too wild this Thanksgiving, because all Lowe’s stores will be back open for action at 6:00am on Friday, November 29th.

REI

REI is another outdoors and fitness store that’s saying “thank you, next” to Thanksgiving this year. For the fifth year in a row, REI will close its doors for the holiday season as part of its #OptOutside scheme. The REI #OptOutside project encourages shoppers and employers to reconnect with nature and spend some time outdoors. Because of this, the chain pays each of its employees for Thanksgiving and Black Friday (despite being closed) just so they go outside and get some fresh air. We love you, REI.

Staples

We stan a store who loves its sales associates, therefore, we stan Staples. We think office supplies should be the last thing you’re thinking about this Thanksgiving, but just incase pens and computer ink pop into your head at any stage on November 28th, we would like to remind you that Staples is closed. Here’s their statement to Best Black Friday: “Staples Retail locations will again close their doors on Thanksgiving Day so that store associates are able to enjoy the holiday with family, friends and loved ones.”

Office Depot/Max

Like Staples, the Office Depot/Max stores know that you want to switch off on Thanksgiving, not think about work! Office supplies are going to be the last thing you’re going to need when you’re enjoying family time, eating food, having some drinks, and being all-round thankful for what you have. Unless what you’re most thankful for is your favorite work pen (we’ve been there). In that case, stock up on your work pens on Black Friday, because both Office Depot and Office Max are closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Neiman Marcus

Neiman Marcus is a luxury department store that’s scattered all over the US. They stock some of the hottest and most sought after designers, but even they know that that’s not important on Thanksgiving. We should be thankful for our friends and family around the holiday season, not materialistic goods … even if that CHANEL bag has been calling your name for months. The store will close everywhere on Thanksgiving, but they usually have great Black Friday deals, so one more day without the CHANEL won’t hurt.

Menards

It seems like all the home renovation stores have a pact this year for Thanksgiving because Menards is another store that is shutting up shop for the sake of their employees on November 28th. While Menards might not be as popular as Home Goods for all your favorite home essentials, they’ll most likely still be bombarded on Black Friday by eager shoppers in search of the next best bargain. Now that they have the day before off, hopefully the staff will be ready for the Black Friday rush on the 29th.

Hobby Lobby

Shutterstock

Hobby Lobby is owned by a devout Christian family, so you best believe that they keep their doors shut for any slightly religious holiday that comes rolling around each year. The arts and crafts store is known for the extensive range of fall and festive decor it stocks each year, so it’s the perfect place to go *before* Thanksgiving to pick up some table settings, cute table cloths, candlesticks, etc. Don’t bother heading to your local store on the actual day though, it’ll be closed.

Half-Price Books

There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book on a cold fall/winter evening. It’s the perfect thing to do while you let your food coma subside on Thanksgiving night, actually. In saying this, you best charge up your Amazon Kindle or get to your local book store during the next few weeks because Half-Price Books is another retail chain that will shut on Thanksgiving Day.

Guitar Center

We don’t know why you could possibly need a brand new instrument on Thanksgiving Day (other than a drunken family sing-along), but just in case you get any wild ideas, know that Guitar Center will be shut on Thanksgiving Day. Some good news, however, is that the store usually does great Black Friday deals, which is amazing because have you ever seen the price of a keyboard? Extortionate.

Barnes and Noble

Like Half-Price Books, Barnes and Noble is well aware that you don’t want to spend Thanksgiving reading books. You’ve got wine, food, and family arguments over charades on your mind. Because of this, Barnes and Noble is operated by good souls who have decided to close their stores on Thanksgiving Day so that their employees can go home and also argue with their families over board games. How considerate of them! The book chain will re-open their stores at 8 AM on Friday, November 29th for Black Friday.

Ann Taylor

Shutterstock

Ann Taylor may be a luxury women’s fashion brand that most modern-day women can’t afford, but they want you to know that they too, enjoy having Thanksgiving Day off to do normal American things. Thanks to this, Ann Taylor stores as well their sister store LOFT will all be closed on Thanksgiving Day this year. If you feel like cashing in and getting some overpriced Ann Taylor garments for a fraction of the price, they’ll also be open bright and early on Black Friday.

A.C. Moore

A.C. Moore is another arts and crafts store just like Hobby Lobby, only a lot less religiously orchestrated — woo! The chain has over 140 stores in the eastern US, but guess what — they’re all going to close on Thanksgiving this year. We don’t know what could be so urgent about arts and crafts on Black Friday, but just in case you have some important crafty needs, a large portion of A.C. Moore stores will open at 5 AM on November 29th. That’s right, 5 AM Black Friday shopping at A.C. Moore.
