21 Fun Fan Theories About SpongeBob SquarePants

Nickelodeon

“Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” SpongeBob Squarepants may be a cartoon for children, but the way that many fans talk about this show on social media one would assume that its a gritty TV drama about nuclear annihilation, secret weddings, and secret adoptions. Countless fans of SpongeBob, Patrick, and the rest of the gang have dug pretty deep into the show and read between the lines to uncover what they think are hidden fan theories behind the TV show.

Some fans actually spend hours on end combing through the details scene by scene to come up with these fan theories that are funny, weird, and even somewhat sensible. While you may not agree with all the theories there’s one thing that we can all agree on and that is this kids’ cartoon is a great TV show. Here are 21 of the most fun fan theories of the beloved SpongeBob Squarepants.

Spongebob Was A Genius

Nickelodeon

Ok so this theory will have you laughing your butt off, and even though most will agree that SpongeBob may be a little smarter than Patrick, this still doesn’t qualify him as a genius. However, fans say because he has created brilliant works of art, created all sorts of new things, has taught beginners how to become stellar musicians pretty much overnight, and has for the most part always succeeded at everything he tries puts him in that genius category. You do see him appear smart many times, and in one episode he even dismantled a car and ended up building a functional rocket ship. Maybe he is a boy genius! Who knows?!

The Main Characters Are Based on The Seven Deadly Sins

Nickelodeon

This next fan theory may sound a bit skeptical, but this is one of the most famous of them all. This theory has been floating around the internet for quite some time now and states that each character from this popular Nickelodeon series represents one of the deadly sins that are outlined in the Bible. SpongeBob represents lust, Patrick is sloth, Squidward is wrath, Mr. Krabs is greed, Plankton is envy, Sandy is pride, and Gary is gluttony. It’s a bit surprising to learn that many people believe the characters in this kid cartoon are based on the less cheerful aspects of humanity. Regardless if it’s true or not, the SpongeBob Squarepants deadly sins theory is one of the more interesting ones to consider. Next time you watch the show brace yourself for a closer look at SpongeBob and his friends.

Bikini Bottom Was A Result of Nuclear Testing

Nickelodeon

This is another theory out of all the fan theories that are mentioned frequently. You’re probably wondering what in the world? Well here’s a quick history lesson. In 1946 there was a real nuclear testing at the Bikini Atoll by the United States, and they set off numerous bombs to see how much damage they would cause. One bomb in particular called the ”Baker” went 27 meters underwater. Now, where do the Bikini Bottom friends live? That’s right underwater!

Many fans seem to think that they were all initially plain sea creatures, but the radiation from the explosion mutated all of them into underwater freaks. Also, they believe the nuclear explosion changed the landscape, allowing weird things to happen like a pineapple being able to grow and last longer underwater.

Pearl Was Adopted

Nickelodeon

Even in the wacky SpongeBob universe, it’s awfully hard to imagine that Pearl the whale is really the biological daughter of Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs, after all, is a crab, so it’s just really not possible. This fan theory suggests that a hook actually killed Pearl’s mom, and that’s the real reason why Mr. Krabs was so passionate about saving her, and there was a process of aquamarine adoption. Fans who believe this theory says that’s why he has an apparent fear/hatred of hooks. If you think about its slightly weird that Mr. Krabs never brings up Pearl’s mother and nobody else mentions her on the show either.

Most of the Series Is Actually In Reverse

Nickelodeon

According to this fan theory aside from the first episode, the entire sides is happening in reverse. Fans who believe this theory declares that all the characters that live in  Bikini Bottom as the show goes on over time are getting less mature, and Squidward becomes less bitter. SpongeBob is more mature towards the beginning and over time grows more and more childish throughout the seasons. Then you have Squidward who the fans say at first acts harsh and bitter towards Spongebob, but slowly overtimes becomes more reasonable. Also what suggests that the series was in reverse many fans is the fact that a couple of characters show up in an order that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

SpongeBob and Sandy Are Married

Nickelodeon

Many fans believe that we should be calling SpongeBob and Sandy Mr. and Ms. Squarecheeks. There’s an episode where SpongeBob remembers a play in which he and Sandy get fake married. The thing is that during the play the minister was never aware that it was just a play and thought he was marrying the pair. So that’s why this fan theory suggests that they are husband and wife.

It seems kind of strange that the priest didn’t know it was a play, and what’s even more bizarre is that the Priest ended it with saying, “I didn’t know this was a play.” So maybe they are married; I mean who really knows for sure? This is one of my favorite theories.

The Krabby Patty Secret Ingredient Is Anchovies

Nickelodeon

Everyone knows that there’s a secret ingredient when it comes to making the krabby patty, and this next theory seems a bit off the wall. How on earth could the secret formula be anchovies you might be asking? Well, some fans say if you go back to the very first episode of the show ”Help Wanted” you will see that the Krusty Krab is being overrun by the anchovy horde which all seem desperate to receive their food.

Some fans suggest that maybe they weren’t there to eat, but was there because they wanted to destroy the Krusty Krab because they head a rumor that they were serving up anchovies. You may think this is a bit far fetched, and maybe it is, but it’s kind of funny thinking of all those anchovies ready to destroy the Krusty Krab.

Spongebob Is Close to Being Middle-Aged

Nickelodeon

According to this theory, SpongeBob is 42 years old and was born in 1977. How could this theory be true you ask? Well here’s how all that math checks out. One fan uses real-life facts to get to this number. We all know Spongebob works at the Krusty Krab and to even start working legally you have to be around 14-18. It appears that SpongeBob works full time, so one could say that he’s 18. He does live by himself, and still has strong lines of communications with his parents, so as the series goes on one could assume he’s in his 20s living alone.

If you use a median of 18 and 28, SpongeBob should be around 22 when the show premiers give or take. So if his age progressed naturally over the life of the show, you’d land at 42. 22+20=42 This is a guestimated theory, so this isn’t his literal age, but many fans agree that he’s around his late 30’s-early 40’s. Works for me!

Squidward Is Spongebob’s Guardian

Nickelodeon

It’s apparent that  SpongeBob loves spending time with his neighbor, while Squidward at best tolerates SpongeBob. However, he never moves or quits his job working right alongside SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab. There’s a theory out there than SpongeBob’s secretly wealthy parents hired Squidward to watch over their son, who they believes may have ADHD.

Even though they’re worried how he would get by on his own, they still wanted him to live an independent life, so they bought him a lovely house and helped Squidward get a place as well in order to be there for their son. If nothing else this theory does make you wonder how SpongeBob could afford the house he was living in on a fry cooks salary.

Spongebob And Squidward’s Homes Are Remains Of A Tiki Bar

Nickelodeon

This is probably one of the fan theories that most people could agree with. When you go to a tiki bar what do you usually see? Pineapples, stone tiki heads, flaming cocktails, and a bunch of flowers. What do SpongeBob and Squidward’s houses look like to you? A pineapple and a stone tiki head. Fans who argue this theory has different reasons on how the pineapple and the tiki head ended up in Bikini Bottom in the first place. One suggests that a sunken ship that had a tiki bar onboard bought these items to the bottom of the sea, and Spongebob and Squidward decided on making them into houses when they stumbled upon them.

Fall Out Boy‘s video for ‘Dance Dance’ is based on an episode of Spongebob Squarepants

Rock Sound

One fan theory proposed is that Fall Out Boy’s video for ”˜Dance Dance’ is based on one of the episodes of SpongeBob Squarepants. Yeah, really. The potentially based episode that the theory is talking about is called ”The Chaperone.” This story follows Spongebob at a prom. The video ‘Dance Dance’ also follows the band members at the prom.

Some of the scenes in the music video are somewhat close to the ones in the Spongebob episode, but then again most prom scenes are no different from one another. It’s a pretty cool theory though to think that Spongebob and his friends going to prom was an inspiration to the Fall Out Boys. This definitely is one theory that leaves fan wondering if this is true or not.

Spongebob Is Able to Manipulate Others And Achieve The Impossible

Nickelodeon

In many of the episodes, we see SpongeBob do many things that are deemed virtually impossible all without breaking a sweat, and that’s why many believe this next theory. For instance, he takes those ”band geeks” in one episode and turns them into full-fledge rockstars.

In the episode ” Hall Monitor” it shows SpongeBob wearing a police uniform, because he was given the job as a hall monitor, and one of his jobs was to direct traffic. What’s crazy is that he was able to get the residents of Bikini Bottom to crash their cars into things continually. Even though they could see that driving their cars towards the wreckage would only cause more damage they still did it. Fans who believe this thinks that the only reasoning has to be is that SpongeBob is controlling them, because why on earth would they do this.

Gary Is A Vagina. Note To Self: Stop Giggling

Nickelodeon

So hopefully fans of the show find this funny and not disturbing. The theory is that Gary is SpongeBob’s vagina. Fans who will believe this  crazy and kind of amusing theory explains why Gary is Spongebob’s ”pet.” In many episodes viewers see SpongeBob at home and comfortable with Gary in so many ways that he’s not with anyone else. Gary is SpongeBob’s constant companion; the character to whom he appears to have devoted his entire life to. SpongeBob cleans and feed Gary, and even when they aren’t getting along its always temporary, because in the end, they both need each other. This theory qualifies as one of the most comical ones that’s for sure.

Spongebob Has Been Brainwashed

Nickelodeon

This theory comes from the notion that right after season three ended fans of the show could tell that SpongeBob never seemed to act the same. Many said he appears to be more stupid””ouch that’s harsh. Those who believe this theory says his sense of stupidity comes from the fact that he is relearning everything all over again, and the only reason he knows his own name is because everyone calls him by that and he learns that that’s his name.

Here’s some more data to back this theory up. There’s an episode where Squidward tells SpongeBob to ”empty his mind” and gives him a book to learn about fine dining in 20 minutes. SpongeBob does what he is told, and then you get a glimpse inside SpongeBob’s head to see mini SpongeBob’s destroying everything he’s ever known for him only to know about fine dining.

In the same episode after SpongeBob serves Squilliam, he asks SpongeBob what’s his name, and he has no clue. The micro SpongeBob’s are frantically searching for him, and that’s when Spongebob loses it and goes crazy. He only knows fine dining, and nothing else, so that’s why he’s having the meltdown, and when the episode is over we are left to think that SpongeBob did go back to normal, but the theory suggests that maybe he didn’t”¦

SpongeBob Is Drunk In That Picture From ”The Secret Box” Episode

Nickelodeon

Now think back to Season 2, when Patrick had a secret box containing ”one embarrassing snapshot of SpongeBob at the Christmas party.” Well, some creative Stans think that SpongeBob was hammered in that photo. The theory/rumored scoop is that Spongebob got a little too wasted at the Christmas party and Patrick snapped a photo of his sloppy friend while he was giving Gary the ”Drunk I love you hug.” We’ve all been there a time or two, so this theory could be more spot-on than most. Who doesn’t love a friend that takes a picture, stashes it in his secret, and maybe to blackmail you in the future or just wants to busts it out as a reminder to you about how you get at parties! WTF Patrick?!

The episode ”Karate Choppers” Was All About Sex

Dorkly

That are many fans out there that the episode ”Kate Choppers” is all about getting in on. These instances are somewhat convincing and super funny. Theorists feel that every single reference to karate in this episode is a metaphor for sex. That’s right. There’s a scene when Spongebob tells Sandy ”Safety first!”, and many think what he really means is ”Don’t worry I’ve got a condom.” Then you have SpongeBob showing Sandy all of his ”karate” moves he knows. Hilarious right?!

As the episode continues, you see Sandy and Spongebob continue their sparring, and in one scene they have a spontaneous bout right in a grocery store. Sandy even surprises Spongebob with some karate on his way to work. This theory is downright humorous.  You will crack up if you go back and watch the episode and keep mentally replacing everything martial-arts related with sex stuff””Yea that’s right I did it!

The two of them are karate-ing so often throughout the show that SpongeBob gets distracted at work, and Mr. Krab even threatens to fire him. He also thinks about Sandy’s karate when he’s looking at customers at the Krusty Krab. LMAO!!

It’s All About Global Warming

Nickelodeon

One of the fan theories that are out there takes a more social approach. This theory indicated that SpongeBob is not a sea sponge, but its actually a kitchen sponge, and he represents pollution and human waste. Mr. Krabs, since he’s SpongeBob’s boss, symbolizes the large corporations that cause pollution, while Patrick embodies western civilization. The lazy society laziness which is the leading cause of the world’s pollution.

Interestingly enough this theory proposes that Squidward is the liberalism that calls for action against climate change, but gets continuously ignored by everyone because they don’t share his interest.

SpongeBob Is Immortal

Nickelodeon

This theory of SpongeBob being immortal may sound a bit crazy, but it does make you wonder how long has he lived under the sea? How long has he been alive? Given that SpongeBob has already lived way longer than the average sea sponge we can assume that something is up with not only him but the other residents of Bikini Bottom.

The fact that neither he or any of the people in Bikini Bottom seem to age suggests to many that all have highly extended lifespans. Fans who also believe that Bikini Bottom was a testing zone for nuclear bombs think that somehow from the radiation it turned all the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom immortal.

There’s A Connection Between The ”Donut Of Shame” and ”The Secret Box” Episode

Nickelodeon

Below is a summary that fans have put together that connects the events of “The Secret Box” with “The Donut of Shame”, and explains this somewhat weird theory.

In the ”Donut of Shame” episode SpongeBob sets up a tea party for Patrick’s birthday which is near Christmas. SpongeBob invites tons of friends to the party, and everyone is having a great time, and during the party, SpongeBob brings out the bottle of what many think is alcohol. All the other guests are chanting at SpongeBob to drink the entire bottle, and when he does, he starts to fill dizzy. SpongeBob starts to dance on tables and prank calls everyone he knows and Patrick unaware that his best friend is drunk takes the photo at the moment when Spongebob is hugging Gary. Later on, Patrick puts the photo he took of the both of them in a box he calls ”The Secret Box.”

Squidward’s Nose Is His Penis

Nickelodeon

This theory indicates that Squidward’s nose is literally his penis, that’s right a penis. Feel free to laugh your butt off. It is a bit weird that Squidward is seen without a pair of pants, despite the fact that he typically wears a brown T-shirt and that most of the other character is shown wearing pants. Some fans suggest that he never felt the need to wear pants is because his nose is his penis.

Some fans believe that explains why Squidward compensates with classiness throughout the show because he’s ashamed of his need to be flaunting his genitals right on the front of his face. Maybe a bit far fetched but pretty funny nonetheless.

Spongebob Is A Tampon

Nickelodeon

Hands down this theory is hysterical and maybe a bit outrageous, but here’s some evidence that fans have put together that explains how SpongeBob, in fact, could be a tampon. The main proof of this funny theory is SpongeBob is crazy absorbent like a tampon, he resides in Bikini Bottom, and one of his BFFs is named Sandy Cheeks. (So if you think it about it for a second, it could be true)

If you listen carefully to the lyrics of the cartoon’s opening song, it says ”Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants, Absorbent and yellow and porous is he! SpongeBob Squarepants. The drop on the deck and flop like a fish. SpongeBob Squarepants.” The lyrics in the eyes of many fans suggest that this fan theory out of all the other fan theories does hold true.
