Everybody But The Baby Looks Like An A**hole In This Wrong Race Sperm-Bank Mix-Up

mixed-race-babiesA white woman in Ohio is suing the sperm bank she and her partner used to conceive their now two-year-old daughter. They requested a white donor, were given sperm from an African-American man and now they have a mixed race child. This lawsuit is going to be a great thing for their daughter to uncover when she’s an adult. This is terrible.

Jennifer Cramblett alleges in her lawsuit filed this week that Midwest Sperm Bank sent her vials of an African-American donor’s sperm instead of the white donor she and her white partner, Amanda Zinkon, requested. She claims that they live in a racially intolerant town and that having a mixed-race baby has been difficult for them. She also claims the added stress of having to do her mixed-race baby’s hair is just too much for her. They want to move. They need money to do that, so they are suing the sperm bank.

From The Chicago Tribune:

She fears that her “all white and unconsciously insensitive family,” which has never been able to fully embrace Jennifer’s homosexuality, could have a negative effect on her daughter, according to the lawsuit.

“Though compelled to repress her individuality amongst family members, Payton’s differences are irrepressible, and Jennifer does not want Payton to feel stigmatized or unrecognized due simply to the circumstances of her birth,” the lawsuit states.

Let me get this straight – they live in a town that is so lily-white that the sight of a mixed race baby is shocking everyone so much that it’s ruining her and her partner’s life? If the atmosphere is that intolerant, I’m definitely behind this couple getting their daughter out of there. Cramblett herself admits that she did not know any black people until she attended college at the University of Akron. I am dumbfounded.

Everything about this story is terrible. I really can’t get over the fact that that they were A-ok raising a white child in an atmosphere of total racial intolerance. I’m finding it hard to have sympathy for these women.

I do have sympathy for the child, though. And I think the sperm bank deserves to be sued. The sperm bank apparently still keeps handwritten records, so someone misread the number – assigning the couple vial 330 instead of 380. Even if they did keep electronic records there is such a thing as human error. What a mess. One small error is totally impacting the life of this child.

I hope they win the suit so they get the financial support they need to move this child to a more tolerant town. I just don’t have a lot of confidence that these women won’t screw this kid up with their obvious sheltered understanding of race. While moving is obviously in the child’s best interest, I have no confidence that these women can raise this child without serious issues due to their own backgrounds.
