Shopping Mom Leaves Baby In Car With A Note And No Way Can You Convince Me This Is Okay

shutterstock_79605517Loading and unloading your baby when you go shopping can be a real pain in the ass. Still, the effort it takes does not justify leaving a baby in the car like a heavy purse. A New Zealand mother left her baby in the car while she shopped with a note for any passers-by to call her if there was a problem. What?

Some witnesses told The New Zealand Herald:

“It was written from the baby’s perspective, and it said, ‘My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything’, and it had the cellphone number.

“We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. And my wife said, ‘I’m not going in without someone being here with the baby’.”

Apparently the baby was sleeping and the mother did not want to disturb it. Again, what? I know it can be very rare to get a moment of peace with an infant – but you don’t just leave a baby in the car and go shopping. What was this woman thinking?

I can say with some measure of confidence that if you have a car you are already a little ahead of the battle. Having lived in New York while my child was an infant, I can assure you that handling a sleeping baby isn’t impossible. This woman is lucky that this is just a fluff human-interest piece and not some tragic someone-car-jacked-my-infant news story. How stupid can you be?

This may just be a case of a bad decision made by an exhausted mother. I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt – but I’m having a hard time. It’s simply not acceptable to leave a sleeping infant unattended in a car. Call me old-fashioned, call me judgemental – but I have no problem standing by that assertion.
