Is Any Mother Really Surprised That Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez Broke Up?

Justin Bieber Selena GomezIt’s happened. I’ve finally transitioned into my mother. I read the news that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez decided to call it quits and I think I actually let out a tut-tut-tut. I shook my head while I tutted. It’s the exact same move my mom pulled when my high school sweetheart and I ended things. And now, I completely understand where my mom was coming from.

Who doesn’t remember being a teenager and thinking that you’ve found true love? I know plenty of couples that were positive they would date all through college, get engaged after their bachelor’s degree was done, and married after graduate school. I’m not sure that my boyfriend and I were planning our wedding or anything, but I know plenty of kids who were. There’s no denying that at the ripe old age of 18, I was considering spending the rest of my life with a boy that still had a lot of growing up to do.

Looking back, I can see how naive the whole thing must have looked. I almost hyperventilated before school dances, and I can imagine that Selena Gomez felt the same way when the Biebs rented out entire stadiums for their date nights. Let’s not forget, the kid had more options that my own first crush. But being able to throw around a lot of money and have media outlets report on your dates doesn’t change the fact that Justin Bieber is still a young man, one with a lot of growing up to do.

My daughter isn’t a teen yet, thank goodness, but she’ll have those same experiences. She’ll believe that her sophomore chemistry partner is the one she’s meant to be with forever and ever. She’ll draw little hearts around their names in the corners of her notebooks. And when she tells me that they’re going to different colleges and she just doesn’t think it will work out, I’ll probably pull the same tut-tut-tut. I’ll shake my head and stroke her hair and assure her that she’ll find someone when the time is right.

I bet Selena and Justin are receiving a little bit of motherly comfort right now. I think every mom on the planet has a sad smile, thinking about how hard it is to lose your first love. We all knew it was coming. But we can feel a little sympathy for these kids as they go through that first heart break.

On the bright side, these young’ins will have a lot of anguish to put into their next albums. And it seems to me like Hollywood is one big college frat party anyways. They’ll move on rather quickly.

Now, I’m going to leave Justin and Selena with a quote from my mother that bugged the crap out of me as a teenager, but feels perfect for this moment. “It’s not the end of the world, even though it feels like it.”
