7-Year-Old Sandy Hook Victim Gets A Firefighter’s Funeral Because He Always Wanted To Be One

shutterstock_25879561The week of funerals for the 26 Sandy Hook victims continues with more hearses for babies. I cry when I think of not only the tremendous loss of these children but also a community that must say goodbye to so many in such a short period of time. But Newtown, Connecticut continues to amaze me with their goodbye to 7-year-old Daniel Barden, who reportedly wanted to be a firefighter. And even though he never got the opportunity to grow up and be one, firefighters from neighboring areas chose to bury him like he was.

Connecticut Post reports that more than 100 firefighters lined the driveway of Lima Church  standing at attention in uniform, some of whom were playing bagpipes. They are reported to have come from  New York City, Simsbury, New London, Lyme as well as other towns and cities to show their support for a fallen little man:

“We came here to show support,” said John Cummings of Ladder Co. 45 in New York City and treasurer of the NYC Firefighters Brotherhood Association. Daniel had cousins who are New York City firefighters. Most got text messages Tuesday telling them Daniel wanted to be a firefighter, too. “We’re here to show our support for this community like our community was deeply affected after 9/11. We’re here to return the favor,” said Lt. Eddy Boles, another NYC firefighter.

The tremendous tribute and gesture to Daniel and his family is another heart wrenching reminder to all that was lost last Friday. I’m just in tears.
