Heads Up, Parents: Varieties of Ritz Bitz, Ritz Cracker Sandwiches, and Goldfish Crackers Are Being Recalled

Uh-oh! This is not a good time for a kid snack recall! We’re smack dab in the middle of summer! Parents everywhere have reached the “throw boxes of food at the kids” stage to catch a few minutes of peace and quiet. And what’s easier to toss at the hungry hoards than a box of Ritz Bitz crackers or a bag of Goldfish?? Well, you may want to find a different snack for the time being. A Ritz recall is being issued for Ritz Bitz and Ritz Cracker Sandwiches, over possible salmonella contamination. Pepperidge Farms, the company that makes Goldfish crackers, also announced a recall of some of their popular products, citing the same concerns.

The Ritz recall affects several different products that contain cheese.

Mondelez International, the company that makes the popular snack crackers, issued the voluntary recall because of the potential risk of salmonella. The products in question all contain whey powder. The supplier of that whey powder has recalled the ingredient.

Pepperidge Farms cited the same concerns over contaminated whey powder in their voluntary recall alert.

Four varieties of the little cheesy fish crackers are being voluntarily recalled, according to the company. That amounts to just about 3.3 million units of fish. The flavors being recalled are Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel.

Both companies say that no illnesses have been reported thus far, which is good! Hopefully, they got out ahead of this before anyone gets sick.

Salmonella symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In healthy people, it will probably just make you pretty miserable. But in kids, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems, it can cause serious and potentially fatal infections.
