Rick Ross ‘Apologizes’ For Rape Lyric By Not Apologizing At All

Rape is everywhere and anyone with a conscience is tired of hearing about it. Something has got to give. From a high school party in Steubenville to a bus in India – it has been widely publicized that rape is a scourge on every woman’s existence. So excuse us, Rick Ross, for getting pissed off and “misinterpreting” your lyrics. Only, we haven’t misinterpreted them. Rick Ross brags about rape in his song You Don’t Even Know It. Period. And he’s not apologizing for it.

Then again, I guess he doesn’t really have to apologize for it. He certainly hasn’t been taken to task. His endorsement deal from Reebok hasn’t suffered one bit. There has been no indication from the company that they intend to pull the endorsement deal from the rapper who brags about rape. Great Reebok. So he endorses Reebok and rape. Why am I not surprised that the brilliant minds behind these ads have no problem with that?

On Friday, a group of protesters from the women’s rights group Ultra Violet attempted to deliver a petition against Ross’ endorsement deal with Reebok to Manhattan’s Reebok Fitness Hub on Fifth Avenue. It had 72,000 signatures on it. The woman trying to deliver the petition was stopped by security and not let in the door. From New York Magazine: When Fashionista spoke with UltraViolet’s co-founder Nita Chaudhary on Thursday morning, she said Reebok hadn’t been in touch with her, and writes WWD, which covered the protest, the petition was never delivered.

The lyrics in question are from Ross’ song “You Ain’t Even Know It” or “U.O.E.N.O.” Yeah, I know – that acronym makes zero sense. In the second verse, Ross raps:

That n*gga sold you that re-rock, you ain’t even know it/
I die over these Reeboks, you ain’t even know it/

Put Molly all in her Champagne, she ain’t even know it/
I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it

“Molly” is the street term for MDMA, also commonly known as Ecstasy. So the Reebok and rape reference are in the same verse. Great. HuffPost reports on the transcript of the radio interview in which Ross “apologizes”:

“Woman is the most precious gift known to man,” he said. “And there was a misunderstanding with a lyric…a misinterpretation where the term rape was–wasn’t used. I would never use the term rape, you know, in my lyrics. And as far as my camp, hip hop don’t condone that, the streets don’t condone that, nobody condones that.”

“I feel like us being artists that’s our job,” he said. “To clarify the sensitive things and the things that we know that really need to be clarified such as a situation as this.”

So what does it mean then, Ross? Do you actually believe that since you didn’t use the word “rape” everything is okay? Maybe you are unaware that drugging a woman into unconsciousness and having sex with her is “rape.” Well – it is. We’re not “interpreting” your lyrics wrong. You’re just a moron. And possibly a rapist if you’ve actually done what you say you have in your song.

Reebok – you are a huge disappointment to women everywhere. And Ross – read a dictionary. Start with the word “rape” and then backtrack to the word “apology.”
