Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, the brunt of the attention has been on Meghan. And for good reason: it's not everyday a "regular" woman becomes a royal! We've all talked about how lucky she is, what a dream come true this must be, etc. We analyze the way she talks about him, looks at him, her physical contact with him. She's been asked how they met, how they fell in love, and how she's adjusting to her new life. And it's all endlessly fascinating and adorable, don't get us wrong! But where's the focus on Harry?! As far as we're concerned, he's the one who got lucky when he met Meghan. And judging by some of the romantic things he's said about her, he would probably agree.
Out of the two princes, we always pegged Prince Harry as the more emotional one. He just seems like he wears his heart on his sleeve a bit more than his more reserved brother, Prince William. When you see William and Kate Middleton together, they're the picture of royal poise and reservation. But Harry and Meghan just look like two kids in love, enjoying their life together. The way he smiles at her will never not make us swoon. And Harry has been pretty vocal about all the things he loves about his wife, and all the ways that she's changed his life for the better. We love love, but we REALLY love the love between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Here's why she's the one, in Harry's own words.
Sometimes relationships take time to build. There's the whole sussing-each-other-out period. It can be harder when the relationship takes place in the public eye. But other times, you just KNOW. You know the moment you meet someone that they are the one you want to be with. That's how Prince Harry felt when he met Meghan for the first time. After they announced their engagement, the couple sat down for an interview with the BBC's Mishal Husain. Harry was asked how he knew and he said, "When did I know she was 'The One'? The very first time we met". All together now: AWWWWWW!
Listen, we need more friends like whoever it was that made this love match happen! We love our friends, but they don't even know any princes, WTF. When Harry met Meghan, he had never seen her on Suits, but was struck by her beauty. He said, "I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her ... and there she was, sitting there. I was, like, 'OK, well I'm really going to have to up my game here [and] sit down and make sure I have a good chat.'" We love that he realized he might have gotten in over his head when he met Meghan - she's pretty spectacular, after all.
We've seen it happen before: as soon as the press and public get wind of a budding new romance between celebs, it's suddenly front page news. While people were aware that Harry and Meghan were dating, they largely kept the beginning of their relationship private. They didn't have to keep things under wraps for long, though. The pair moved pretty quickly, from first date to falling in love. "We had two dates in London last July, and it was I think about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana, and we camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic", said Harry.
Harry says, "The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was sort of confirmation to me that all of the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect. [There] was this beautiful woman, who just sort of literally tripped and fell into my life [and] I fell into her life." That's very much a meant-to-be mentality, and we find it so refreshing! Especially coming from someone for whom every step of life has been laid out in advance. The fact that he knew immediately that Meghan was the one is so romantic, and he followed his heart in a endearingly reckless sort of way.
We're not talking about getting to know your new husband's family traditions at the holidays. We're talking about entering into an entirely new life, with rules and expectations. Being a royal is more than just a title - it's an actual job. A lot of people aren't cut out for it, but Harry isn't worried about Meghan. He said, "For me, it's an added member of the family. it's another team player .... we want to carry out the right engagements, the right work." Harry continued, "The fact that she'll be really unbelievably good at the job part of it is a huge relief to me. We're a fantastic team, we know we are, the more we hope to over time to try have as much impact over time on the stuff we care about."
Before Meghan met Harry, she was living in Canada and working as an actress on the successful TV show, Suits. She had her career, her friends, her hobbies ... her life! Usually when you start a relationship with someone, the two of you fit your lives together. But that wasn't an option for Meghan and Harry. Harry said, "I know that I’m in love with this girl and I hope that she’s in love with me. But we still had to sit down on the sofa and have some pretty frank conversations with her to say, ‘What you’re letting yourself in for, it’s a big deal. It’s not easy for anybody.’ I know that at the end of the day, she chooses me, and I choose her. And therefore, whatever we have to tackle together, or individually, it’ll always be us together as a team."
It's no secret that Meghan has experienced some troubling behaviors from certain members of her family since being thrust into the international spotlight. Her stepsister Samantha has badmouthed her to the press and is writing a book about their childhood together. Her own father Thomas created a public mess when he took their private matters to the press. But her mom has always been her rock, so we're sure it was incredibly important to Meghan that Doria and Harry get along. Harry's take on Doria? "Her mom's amazing!" That's a winning endorsement if we've ever heard one.
She was marrying into the royal family - you knew the ring was going to be good. But when we learned how much thought Harry put into the ring ... well, let's just say we teared up a bit. "The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's her favorite, and the main stone is from Botswana, and the little diamonds are from my mother's jewelry collection to make sure she's with us on this journey," Harry said. We love that he took Meghan's preference into account, and we super love that he incorporated the memory of his mom when designing the ring.
Prince Harry was just 12 years old when Diana died in a tragic car accident. Losing a parent at any age is incredibly hard, but losing one as a child changes you forever. It's heartbreaking to go through all these major life changes without your biggest support system. Wondering if they'd approve, or yearning for their support and encouragement. It's clear that Harry carries his mother in his heart, and he's sure she would have given Meghan the stamp of approval. When asked what he thinks Diana would have thought about his wife Harry said, "Oh, they'd be thick as thieves, without question. I think she would have be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends — best friends with Meghan."
If you want to know someone's true character, put them in a room with a dog or a baby. They will always be able to see who a person is, right into their soul. We imagine it was pretty intense when Meghan Markle met the Queen for the first time (she's the freaking Queen of England!), but Meghan seems like the kind of gal who can hold her own with anyone. However, she also had to meet the Queen;s beloved corgis. But that, according to Harry, went better than he could have hoped! If he was wondering if he'd picked a good one, he need only check in with the doggos. Harry said, "The corgis took to her straight away ... I spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing!"
Yes, we had Harry and Meghan's wedding date in our calendar. Yes, we woke up at an absolutely ungodly hour to watch the entire thing from start to finish. No, we do not regret that one single bit. From the arrival of the guests to Meghan and Doria arriving and then the procession down the aisle, the entire thing was perfection. But nothing tops the very simple words Harry had for his soon-to-be-bride as she finally met him at the altar: "You look amazing." What else could he have said, really? She did look amazing, and he was probably struggling to find any words to do the moment justice. Three simple words, but they were perfect.
Because people can be absolute trash, Meghan has endured some pretty despicable attacks by the tabloids and the public since she and Prince Harry announced their engagement. But Harry is having none of that. In a rare move, the palace released a statement on behalf of Harry, condemning the way she's been treated. "Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her," said the statement. "It is not right that a few months into a relationship with [Prince Harry] that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows that commentators will say that 'this is the price she has to pay' and this 'this is all part of the game.' He strongly disagrees. This is her life and his." Don't mess with the Sussexes.
The bump watch for Harry and Meghan started almost as soon as they walked down the aisle. The royals tend to move pretty quickly when it comes to procreation, and these two moved fast right from the beginning! When the couple finally announced their pregnancy, we were beyond excited. But not as excited as Harry! One of of their first official visits in New Zealand as expectant parents Harry said, "From myself, my wife and our little bump, we are so grateful to be here. We bring blessings from my grandmother the Queen and our family. We are so grateful for your hospitality and the work to look after this beautiful place." OUR LITTLE BUMP!
Look, not many parents will come right out and admit that they prefer to have a boy or a girl. Yes, we all want healthy babies. Yes, we'll be fine either way. But come on now - whether you admit it or not, you probably have a preference! Harry sure seems to, and we think it'd adorable that he says so. During their Australian trip, a fan called out to Harry and Meghan that they hope the baby is a girl. And Harry replied excitedly, "So do I!" Maybe Harry is so enamored of Meghan that she hopes to have a daughter who's as amazing as she is. Or maybe he's just more comfortable with the idea of raising a daughter the first go-round. Either way, we love how excited he is, and how open he is about sharing his excitement!
This guy seems genuinely thrilled about hitting the wifey lottery with Meghan Markle, and now he's just over the moon about their new edition. During the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Australia Harry said, "First of all, thank you for the welcome you have given Meghan and I over the last few days. I have been so proud to be able to introduce my wife to you and we have been so happy to be able to celebrate the personal joy of our newest addition with you all." We're so happy that you're so happy, Harry!
Harry has always been pretty vocal about wanting to start a family one day. Which is so refreshing to hear coming from a man! Not that men don't harbor dreams of becoming dads. We just don't hear them talk about those dreams much. In an interview in 2012, Harry said he's wanted to become as dad for as long as he could remember. "I've longed for kids since I was very, very young," he said. "And so, I'm waiting to find the right person, someone who's willing to take on the job." He positively lights up around kids, and we can't wait to see him as a father.
Prince Harry clearly carries the memory of Diana with him. And while we realize how difficult it must be to do all of this without her, he knows she would be thrilled with how he's turned out. He said, "I hope she's looking down, you know, with tears in her eyes, being incredibly proud of what we've established, I suppose. I'm sure she's longing for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again. … I can't wait for the day...it will be fantastic. I've got a kid inside of me. I want to keep that. I adore kids, I enjoy everything that they bring to the party. They just say what they think."
In January of this year, when baby countdown was in full-effect, Harry acknowledged that even impending fatherhood had already changed him as a person. He said, "As someone who is about to become a father, I am acutely aware of our shared responsibility to make this world more resilient and its inhabitants more accountable for the next generation. The only way to see real progress is not by chance, it’s by change. Let's get to work." Parenthood really does open up your eyes and heart, and it's clear that Baby Sussex has already had a huge impact on Prince Harry.
