Future Tabloid Cover: Tori Spelling Survives Emergency Surgery After C-Section Complications

Tori SpellingJust two weeks ago we were all celebrating the birth of Finn Davey McDermott, the latest little one in the Spelling-McDermott clan. Tori Spelling had posted an adorable picture of her son’s itty bitty hand on her website. Dean McDermott was writing open letters to his new little guy and posting them for everyone to see. But apparently there were issues that none of us knew about, because on Saturday, Spelling was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

A rep for the actress told People magazine, “Tori underwent emergency surgery over the weekend due to complications from her c-section. She remains in the hospital and is resting comfortably.”

As media organizations are quick to point out, this is Spelling’s second trip to the hospital following a birth. After she had Hattie in October, Tori was admitted to the hospital for migraines. Thankfully she ended up being okay and getting pregnant again almost immediately after the birth of their youngest daughter.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, there are plenty of possible side effects and health issues from having children so close together. While there’s been limited testing, for understandable reasons, many doctors believe that back-to-back pregnancies don’t give women’s bodies enough time to repair and rebuild the strength necessary to carry a child.

Limited research suggests that a pregnancy within 12 months of giving birth is associated with an increased risk of:

  • The placenta partially or completely peeling away from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery (placental abruption)
  • The placenta attaching to the lower part of the uterine wall, partially or totally covering the cervix (placenta previa), in women who previously had a C-section

Obviously, we don’t know what exactly the complication was for Tori Spelling or if it was directly related to having two children so close together. But we do know that whatever happened, the new mom is recuperating and hopefully getting pampered by her husband and older children.

While we wish Tori a speedy recovery and all the health in the world, there’s one more thing I would personally like to wish for her. I’d like for this experience to not end up on a tabloid cover when she sells the first pictures of little Finn and displays him on Life & Style or OK. I don’t think there’s actually a chance that her postnatal scare won’t become an Us Weekly exclusive, but we can always dream, right folks?
