Naked Yoga Mom’s Instagram Account Is Shut Down, Of Course

By  |

original__1377361806_142.196.156.251I’m sure by now you have all seen the image of the woman in an inverted yoga pose, naked, breastfeeding her child. Of course, the Instagram account owned by Amy Woodruff, or as most know her now,“Naked Yoga Breastfeeding Mom” was shut down after the photo went viral. But the real news here is that the photo was not staged. I am now obsessed with it, and with this lovely little family.

The photo was actually posted to her blog two years ago, but no one knew who she was until Babycenter ran a story about her earlier this month. As you can imagine, not everyone reacted positively to an image of a naked woman doing a headstand breastfeeding a child. People don’t like naked. They also generally don’t like breastfeeding, if it’s seen. This photo was a recipe for Internet-judgement disaster.

But did you know the photo wasn’t staged? She told the Huffpost in an email, “The truth is we were living on a small community in Hawaii where our land was clothing optional and yoga was/is a necessity! I was just doin’ my daily flow when the little sweet pea came to sneak a suckle,” she wrote in an email. In her Babycenter interview, she said she chose the “simple life” in her early twenties and she’s been living a sort of nomadic life ever since:

In 2008, I saved a handful of money, gave my landlord a 30-day notice, quit my job, loaded up my truck and took off on a six month journey across the states. I had a 16′ teepee that I had been living in and brought it with as well. I was deep into my yoga practice and put a lot of trust in the universe knowing I was being guided and taken care of on every level. That journey changed my life forever and I met my beloved shortly after.

She talks about her desire to “nest” more now that her daughter is getting older and responds to the reactions to her photo in a very balanced, positive way:

The yoga community and earth mamas loved it! Women who didn’t seem to enjoy breastfeeding or more of the conservative crowd thought it was the weirdest thing and just couldn’t wrap their heads around it. I enjoyed hearing all sides of the spectrum as it reminded me that we are all different and if anything it may have opened the eyes and hearts for some who didn’t think multitasking to that level was possible! No regrets about posting the photo whatsoever.

The father of the breastfeeding child also responds to the closing of the Instagram account and their notoriety on Woodruff’s blog, “Daughter of the Sun.” Maybe it’s the idealist in me but I can’t help but love this family who shuns the nine-to-five routine and travels around the world. Instagram has a policy against nudity, but not against breastfeeding. Fans of Woodruff’s blog and Instagram feed are trying to get her account back up, to which she says:

If my Instagram account is not reinstated, then so be it! I will continue to create and share more beauty whether on Instagram or beyond! Let’s not attach ourselves to the imagery but LIVE the actual message!

I think I sort of love her.

I am just jealous of her living in clothing optional Hawaii! I was just lamenting the need to put on clothes today. Ugh, I want to move to a nudist colony.

I hate clothes. They are so expensive, and I am not really the type of person who stays in one fixed size. I would totally go for an au natural movement.

Did you ever go to the nudist beach on Sauvies? It’s wonderful, although I like to keep my bottoms on so I can go swimming in the river (I know that the bottoms offer no protection, let me live in my little bubble)

We lived closer to rooster rock, so we would go out there before the babe was born. So much fun.

It is a long walk down to the water from what I remember, I hated that because we only ever when when it was a million degrees outside. But the water is nice, you can lay out on the sandbar and not have to swim, but still have water on you.

Nudity isn’t allowed on instagram. She shouldn’t get special treatment just because she’s a mother.

      August 24, 2013 at 3:58 pm

      Truth.

I don’t agree with it personally because there’s a difference between pornographic and non-sexualized nudity, but instagram doesn’t see it that way, probably because the majority of its users are teenagers and that would be a legal minefield. Instagram can run instagram however instagram wants.

I don’t think the mother is asking for special treatment.

    • Amber

      August 24, 2013 at 8:05 pm

If she wants to be allowed to post nude pictures when the TOS clearly states that nudity is not allowed, she is asking for special treatment.

      August 24, 2013 at 8:34 pm

She posted the picture awhile back.

      No one at Instagram noticed.

      Her life went on.

      It went viral.

Instagram took notice and suspended her account.

She replied with the above statement that says if she isn’t reinstated, then so be it. The article clearly states that its her fans that are petitioning for the reinstatement.

Totally agree. If someone’s life revolves around that, well…

    • NicknamesAreDull

      August 24, 2013 at 5:01 pm

Right? It’s in the terms of service. I understand this is far from porn, but I don’t understand why people get so offended and irritated by a company removing pictures that go against their TOS. If she wants to share her pictures, there’s nothing wrong with that but she should do it on a site that allows nudity.

    • American expat in Europe

      August 25, 2013 at 5:34 pm

She is showing NOTHING. Get over yourself.

    • NicknamesAreDull

      August 26, 2013 at 11:29 am

I was a stripper, hon. Her body isn’t something that I want, and nudity doesn’t bother me
A company has the right to make rules for their site. One of those rules was no nudity. It doesn’t matter if it’s beautiful, artistic nudity or porn. It doesn’t matter if you can’t make out anything, if a person has no clothes on, they’re nude and the company can take down/delete their account. It’s not that complicated.

    • momma425

      August 26, 2013 at 2:26 am

It doesn’t matter how much she is showing. Nudity is nudity, and against the terms of service. Period.

    • chickadee

      August 25, 2013 at 5:27 pm

No, and to be fair, it’s some of her followers and supporters (and the
title of this post) that make it sound like The Man hates breastfeeding
      naked yoga mothers.

    • American expat in Europe

      August 25, 2013 at 5:33 pm

What is she even showing? The side of her leg? Give me a break. There is FAR worse on Instagram & otherwise. Let me guess, you’re not a mother? Jealous maybe? If you are, that’s even worse. Yuck.

    • Amber

      August 25, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Why am I such an awful person and what would I be jealous of? I’m more than capable of violating Instagram TOS if I so desired.

Instagram doesn’t want any nudity. I’m sure they have their reasons. If you post a nude picture and they find out about it, they remove it. Just as they have done here.

This has nothing to do with her being a mother. Nothing.

I am a mother, by the way, I’m laughing right now since that little bit of information seems to disgust you so. LOL

      August 26, 2013 at 7:38 am

Amber, glad to give you your laugh for the week.
The fact you are a mother and can’t handle breastfeeding is sad. No, I am not a breastfeeding sanctimommy, but you my dear are a prude. Grow up. 😉

    • Rachel Sea

      August 26, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Amber’s not being a prude, she didn’t even express a value judgement of the picture. It has nothing to do with being able to “handle breastfeeding,” the woman posted a picture of herself where she has no clothes on, it’s a violation of company policy, the company responded as outlined in their policy, if you don’t like it, complain to Instagram, not Amber.

I’m pro-breastfeeding all the way, and I have no problem with the picture, but I also don’t think Instagram should violate their own policy for her.

Not that there probably aren’t some…I would think a PARENTING blog would attract mostly parents, so I am not sure why you are so quick to assume that Amber isn’t a mom.
Also, she has said NOTHING against breastfeeding. I doubt very much that Amber (or most of the mothers here) have any problem with breastfeeding. Feed away!
Quite frankly, Amber didn’t even say anything terrible or prudish about nudity either, except that Instagram doesn’t allow it.
      You are an idiot.

I may have missed something here, but if the photo wasn’t staged, why are her ankles bound to the branch?

    • Desi

      August 24, 2013 at 7:24 pm

I don’t think her ankles are bound to anything I think it’s the angle of the shot and possible an anklet or a tattoo?

    • Jessie

      August 24, 2013 at 9:51 pm

The perspective is all wrong for her to be bound to anything. If you actually look, you can tell that the tree AND it’s branches are several yards behind her. That is most likely an ankle braclet or a weight of some sort around her ankles (my guess is it’s weighted, just because I know some people who do yoga poses like this with weights on their ankles, and it seems a bit thick to be an anklet).

I’m confused…was the photo actually posted to IG or was it only on her blog? I agree that full on nudity should be removed from IG…deleting accounts seems a little extreme, wouldn’t IG have the power to freeze the account until the user agreed to comply with the terms and conditions or just delete the offending photo? Also, would it be different if she were wearing a bikini and the child had done the same by moving her top?

I believe I read on another article that she’d already had two strikes against her Instagram account – I’m not certain, though.

      Me neither.

I just double checked IG’s terms of service, too. She mentions on her blog that the image was not pornographic, and she’s right. It isn’t in the least. However, IG’s terms of service are very clear that nudity and partial nudity aren’t allowed either, so…

    • Emmali Lucia

      August 24, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Can you imagine living in a nudist colony and having an instagram account? Wouldn’t that be, I don’t know, extremely hard? Because they really do enforce the “NO NUDITY OR PARTIAL NUDITY” rule.

    • Name

      August 25, 2013 at 12:02 am

Yeah, I honestly have no idea. I did check out some of her other pictures and they’re fully clothed – probably since she does mention a nomadic lifestyle and most places aren’t so clothing-optional – but. I guess nudists can post neck-up pictures only?

Although you probably have to be really careful about who’s in the background of your shot…

    • American expat in Europe

      August 25, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I agree she should have a chance to remove anything they deem going against rules. However, she isn’t even showing anything. That’s what I don’t get. It seems to be the JUST fact she’s “naked” (even though no one can see squat) that has all the prudes out in full force. There is no frontal nudity — wtf?

    • Name

      August 25, 2013 at 9:03 pm

The fact remains that IG does not allow complete OR partial nudity and that she’d already had two strikes against this particular account.

My first thought was “Well, they say to try breastfeeding on your hands and knees and dangle over the baby when you have a clogged duct so the suckling pulls different ducts. That works too.”

I had never heard of her or seen any of her pictures. (“Naked yoga breastfeeding mom” is not something I typically do Google searches on.) I give her mad props for having the courage to follow her heart, but she broke the TOS of Instagram. I understand she’s not asking to be reinstated – her followers are – but she still broke the TOS. Oh well.
