19 Injured In New Orleans Mother’s Day Parade Shooting Because What’s A Parade Without Gun Violence

By  |

Mothers Day Shooting New Orleans I don’t understand the mentality behind feeling like you need to bring a gun to a parade to honor Mother’s Day but that’s exactly what happened yesterday in New Orleans when three people opened fire on a crowd and ended up injuring at least 19 people. I’m a mother, mothers are my people, in my world you don’t mess with mothers and children and this entire thing infuriates and saddens me beyond belief. I would go to a Mother’s Day parade. I would go and bring my children with. I think a lot of us would, why not? Beautiful spring day, parade held in our honor, take the kids to a parade and enjoy the weather and some music and the sentiment behind the event and I’m sure none of the people who did just that thought they would end up being shot. From NBC news:

At least 19 people were injured on Sunday when multiple gunmen opened fire on a Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans, police said.

A 10-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl were grazed by bullets but were in good condition, New Orleans Police spokesman Garry Flot said in a statement. A woman and a man were in surgery Sunday evening, but there were no fatalities and most wounds were not life threatening, police said.

At least three people were spotted running away from the scene after the shooting on North Villere Street in the 7th Ward neighborhood at 1:45 p.m. At least one suspect was described as a man between the ages of 18 and 22.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said there may have been as many as three shooters, and that two different types of weapons were likely used.

The second line parade took place about one and a half miles from the French Quarter and included around 400 people. Detectives are still conducting interviews and retrieving surveillance video in hopes of attaining the identities of the shooters. Mayor Mitch Landrieu spoke from outside the Interim LSU Public Hospital:

“It’s not the second line that did the shooting,” he said. “The cultural events are very important to us, it’s like calling for an end to Mardi Gras because someone takes an opportunity to shoot someone during one of our parades.”

Exactly. Parades don’t kill people. Assholes who brings guns to parades kill people. I’m sure the NRA and other gun owners will try and explain to all of us why carrying a gun to an event to honor mothers is a perfectly logical idea, but I won’t be buying it. New Orleans has been though enough. This country has been through enough gun violence.I want the shooters found. I want all the moms who attended this event to have a giant Mother’s day do-over. I want to go visit them all and bring them flowers and candy and hug them until my arms fall off. And those two kids who were shot. I can’t understand the logic behind any of this. I’ll be thinking of these victims today and hoping for their full recovery. What a tragic, terrible Mother’s Day.

Gawd I am so sick of this shit. I am SICK AND TIRED of reading about gun violence. When will it stop??? I am a BIG believer of the Constitution and the Bill of Right, but (and I am well prepared to be downvoted to DEATH, but fuck it I don’t care) the 2nd Amendment just needs to DIE.

There I said it. Flame me to death.

I feel you, totally. Enough is enough already. And I KNOW there are great gun owners who would never take their gun out of their safes to bring to a damn parade but what about the rest of these assholes?

Yeah I’m sick of hearing about the “responsible gun owners” crap. For every one of those mystical creatures, there are 10 assholes who shoot up each other, shoot at school kids, and allow their children to “somehow” get into “accidents” that kill their other children. Screw this. It just ain’t worth it.

The 2nd Amendment was useful back when the US was a new country trying to establish a foothold and facing some serious threats. Now? Nope. They should seriously repeal it, but that will happen approximately never. Sigh.

FBI says it’s street-violence not terrorism, so it could just be two gang members going after each other.

    Make every bullet cost $5,000.

Yeah I don’t think it was terrorism, and I heard three shooters. Yes on the bullets for real

I know he had it as part of a stand up routine, but Chris Rock had the score of things with the whole ”expensive bullets” idea.

You know, every time that there’s a shooting, someone says that there needs to be more people in the crowd with guns… well, this is the… 4th violent attack on large crowds in america since the beginning of the year? You would think (especially because these attacks all happened close to one another), there would be MANY people of that mentality who would have brought their guns, just in case someone decided to get their guns out to attack people. Yet, no one did. What’s the problem then? I mean, just the amount of people who scream “2nd amendment rights!” all the time should indeed start their own anti-shooting militias and go to super fun events with the guns and keep an eye out for shooters on the loose… Yet, no such thing has happened? Why?

Cops have tons of training on reacting to violence. It’s not easy, when you witness violence around you, to act fast and proactively and defend yourself and others with a gun. Most people either run away or freeze. Then you have the people with guns who just panic and start shooting blindly. It’s one thing to regularly go to a gun range, or go hunting. But reacting to a mass shooting is in a completely different category and most people aren’t trained to react to that kind of tragedy. If the solution really were for people to bring their own guns, wouldn’t the problem have been solved by now??

EXACTLY. and where are these people going to these events? WHERE? where are all the proud NRA people protecting us?

I think that, from now on, whenever there’s a shooting, instead of screaming for more gun control, we should scream at the NRA for not being there with their guns to protect us. Or I mean you, because I’m in Canada, where we don’t have as many problems with gun violence.

Guys, in most states it’s illegal to carry a concealed firearm at or near a parade, sporting event, concert, park, school, government building, demonstration, hospital, fair, amusement park, mass transit facilities, churches, and so on.

Exactly!! It is illegal to have a gun at a parade in the city of New Orleans so no law-abiding citizen is going to be there with a gun.

Also, this DOES happen. Legal gun owners DO disarm bad guys or deter them with the presence every day. It doesn’t make the headlines when someone decides not to shoot because there is another guy next to them with a gun!!!

I’ve said this here before, and I will say it again- as someone who comes from a country where possesion of a firearm is illegal, I cannot fathom how this is even allowed to happen.

Shame on the NRA. Shame shame shame. Shame on them for putting profit before people. Shame on them for doing everything they can to remove restrictions on gun ownership, and shame on them for making it their business to keep politicians in their pockets.

By now I’m convinced that the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a giant ACME magnet.

Actually there were several other shooting over this past year where gun toting 2nd Amendment rights supporters were there and were able to stop the gunman. However, you don’t hear about those. They don’t make national news and stir up the internets when a guy fires one shot and a good guy with a gun nearby draws his weapon and disarms the guy. That happens every day.

Also, putting more restrictions on guns would NOT have stopped this. The one suspect was not allowed to carry a gun under current laws. He shouldn’t have had a gun in the first place but the law was not adequately enforced. Creating more laws to restrict gun ownership is not going to stop this because we don’t have the resources to enforce the laws we currently have, let alone more of them. I fully agree something needs to be done to stop gun violence, however we should be pushing for better enforcement of current laws, not adding new laws. Lets get the current ones enforced and then see what else needs to be done.

Also, just because this is annoying me. It wasn’t a Mother’s Day Parade. It was a second line parade on Mother’s Day. It was not a big family event with floats and everyone in the city attending. A second line parade usually involves a band, a lot of drinking and is somewhat an adult affair. I’m sure there were plenty of kids there but I personally would not take my kids second lining. Its a bit of a party atmosphere. While I go to this area a few times per year for different events, I would not have felt entirely safe going to this event because of the atmosphere.
