This Mom Deserves a Round of Applause for Billing Her Freeloading Son $1,000 for Being an A**hole

If your parents will have you, living at home can be an excellent way for a young adult to save money while working or going to school. Once a person is over 18, however, any such parental largesse is optional and should be received with gratitude. Unfortunately, a lot of young people in that position take their parents’ generosity for granted, like one Redditor who was recently stunned when his mother presented him with an itemized bill for everything she’d spent on him during the previous 13 months he’d been living at home. It was a clever move on her part, especially since she added a $1,000 surcharge for “Being an asshole and not appreciative of your mother’s support financially or otherwise.”

According to The Daily Mail, a Canadian Redditor going by Chalipo has been living at home for the past 13 months while he goes to school. Not only are his parents letting him live at home without paying rent or really paying for anything, they’re even footing the bill for school. Lucky Chalipo! Chalipo was apparently not being quite appreciative enough, however, because one day he received a bill, which he then posted to Reddit saying, “Mom gave me an invoice for supporting me for 13 months. Charged me $1,000 for being an unappreciative asshole.”

He got off pretty light on that one. I think the going rate on a year of assholery is more like $2,500.

Aside from the asshole surcharge, the rest of the amounts aren’t particularly outlandish. She itemizes his share of the electric and water bill, his food, the cost of his transportation, tuition, and his share of all the birthday and wedding gifts she bought on his behalf. She included all the housecleaning and laundry she’s been doing, but only charged him $50 a month. (I’d have charged a lot more.)

Including five years of tuition, though, the bill came out to over $39,000. Staring at that giant number, and also the asshole surcharge, appears to have really made him think about the way he’d been behaving.

Chalipo says his mother doesn’t actually intend for him to pay the bill. It was just delivered as a wake-up call and a reminder of all the stuff he was taking for granted while being an ungrateful little shit, and it seems to have done the job.

“My mom doesn’t expect me to repay her. Her parents charged her interest so she doesn’t want to do that to me. …  I hope to one day be successful enough to support my family and repay her but she doesn’t expect me to,” he said.

That’s a nice plan for the future, but in the meantime it sounds like he should just start saying, “Thank you” every now and again.
