Mom Arrested for Leaving Baby in Hot Car While She Ran an Errand

Police in Kansas arrested a 29-year-old woman this week for allegedly leaving a baby in a hot car in a mall parking lot. Witnesses say the mother went shopping in the mall while her infant slept in the car. It doesn’t sound like it was an accident, either. The mother reportedly knew her baby was in the car, but thought it was OK.

It’s not OK to leave a baby alone in a parked car, especially not on a hot day.

According to WLWT, 29-year-old Christina Krups reportedly parked her black BMW at the Florence Mall in Florence, Kentucky, this weekend. A witness saw Krups peer through the rear window before running quickly into the mall.

80-year-old Pat Cofield saw that, and figured the only reason to peer through the window like that was if there was a baby or a dog in the car. It was 83 degrees outside.

Cofield told her daughter to go check the car. Cofield’s daughter saw a baby sleeping in a car seat in the backseat.

The two called the police and reported the baby in the car. Police responded quickly. They were reportedly at the car in just a few minutes after the Cofields called.

The mother thought it was OK to leave the baby in the car for a short return

The mother was back pretty quickly. Christina Krups was back at the car before police broke the window.

Krups knew the baby was in the back seat of the car. She figured it was OK to run into the mall quickly to return something. Kkrups returned in 10 or 15 minutes, according to the witnesses’ timeline. But still, it was 83 degrees outside and police say it reached 105 degrees in the car, with the baby inside it.

Fortunately, the baby was not injured. The baby’s father picked it up and took it home.

Leaving a baby in a parking lot in a hot car is dangerous, even for just a short time. Police arrested Krups and charged her with wanton child endangerment. She’s out on bond and scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
