Miley’s Latest Publicity Stunt Uses Cute Homeless Guy Instead Of Foam Finger

2014 MTV Video Music Awards - ShowEveryone remembers Miley Cyrus’ Blurred Lines performance from the VMAs last year. Last night she made sure to grab a huge chuck of the spotlight yet again by allowing a dashing young man named Jesse to use her acceptance speech as a platform to raise awareness for homeless teens and Miley’s latest concert series.

Instead of joining him onstage, Miley watched from her seat as Jesse shared his story, as seen in this video:

During his speech, Jesse also announced a Prizeo campaign Miley has started in support of “My Friends Place,” a homeless center in Hollywood, California. When you donate to the campaign, you are also entered to win concert tickets to a Miley Cyrus concert in Rio.

Twitter and social media went wild with praise for Miley and her new outlook, but personally, I think we should hold off on giving Miley a platinum halo and declaring her “reformed”. Call me a cynic, but I’m not buying it. While it is great to see her use her fame in such a positive way, the fact that she chose to do so at an award show feels a bit like a publicity stunt. Miley has had a very successful career and has made millions upon millions- if she wanted to help, why ask for donations, why not just donate or start a foundation of her own? Instead she takes a homeless teen who, I’m just going to say it- with his trendy, flowing locks is so handsome I wouldn’t think twice seeing him on a billboard in Times Square, gives him a makeover like in The Princess Diaries, and then parades him around for a ton of promotional pictures. Plus, the fundraising campaign is intertwined with a concert ticket give away. Sorry not sorry, I can’t help but feel like a publicist was very involved in this whole thing.

Maybe I’m utterly wrong, and time will show that Miley is really turning over a new leaf and trying to raise support for a cause that is near and dear to her heart. If that’s the case, I’ll gladly mail her an apologetic fan letter. Either way, I’m just glad there was no humping of foam fingers on display last night.
