8 Awesome Girls In Traditionally ‘Boys’ Costumes For Girls Who Hate Pink

Growing up, my favorite Halloween costumes were always superhero costumes. But not the “girl” versions of superheroes (not that there is anything wrong with those) but the original version. Batman was my all-time fave, but I also liked The Flash, Spiderman and Iron Man (before he was cool). I usually had to wear the boys version though, because the girls Halloween superhero costumes just didn’t exist back then. Or they sucked.

This year two of my own kids are dressing up as superheroes. My son is going as The Flash, because The Flash is awesome. My oldest daughter spent weeks debating between going as Wonder Woman or Spiderman (not girl) before deciding on the former. She chose Wonder Woman because, and I quote “She’s not all pinkified like the other girls stuff, those are lame.” Now, pink is great if that’s your cup of tea, but it shouldn’t be the default in my opinion. Why is it so hard to find a girls Halloween costume (especially superhero-related) that isn’t hyper-feminized and pink?

Don’t get me wrong. There are non-pink options when it comes to superheroes. But in my experience it’s pretty much slim pickings. But why chose a “girl” costume at all? There’s no law that says only boys can wear “boy” costumes. Below are some amazing little girls wearing traditionally “boys” costumes, kicking ass and taking names.

8. Hulk Ballerina 

This costume made my day. There’s just something about The Hulk in a tutu and fairy wings that makes me smile.

7. Iron Man

I am totally cheating with this one because it’s obviously for a birthday, but whatevs. This kid is my hero. I ALWAYS wanted an Iron Man birthday party but I was afraid to ask because I thought I would get picked on (even more than I already did). I think I know what I’m gonna do for the big 3-0 this year.

6. Spiderman Ballerina

Yes, another superhero ballerina. I seriously hope this is becoming a trend. Tutus make everything better. I’m going to start wearing one to work.

5. World’s Cutest Batman

This is another cheat, so sue me, but I think the fact that this little girl just woke up and said “Ya know what, I feel like being Batman today” makes it even better. Halloween is great, but everyday should be a superhero day.

Superman isn’t one of my personal favorites (I always felt like he was too super), but this kid is rocking it.

There is nothing not awesome about this Captain America costume. The un-pinkified Spider Girl costume next to her is a bonus. Squeee!

1. The Littlest Joker

I know, I know. This is NOT a superhero. But what screams “boy costume” more than The Joker. The costume as a concept might be played out (I think it was a law that you had to dress as Heath Ledger‘s Joker back in 2008) but this kid’s version is my favorite thing ever. I like this even more than I like VAG CAKES, and that’s a lot.
