The Internet Loves Fathers: Dad Vacuums Child’s Head And Becomes Internet Sensation
I don’t really have a problem being called a “mommy blogger.” I blog. I’m a mommy. I guess it makes sense. It’s the negative connotation that always seems to be attached to the label that irks me. The other thing that irks me is the gender bias that exists in the blogosphere when it comes to parenting. Dads are just naturally funnier and more adorable than moms. The Internet says so.
I’m exaggerating a little, but if you pay attention to parenting news like I do – you will see what I mean. Dad makes a time-lapse video playing with child all day. Internet sensation. Photographer makes a photo series that simulates being a “distracted dad,” again, Internet sensation. Well, it’s happening again. Man makes a video of himself sticking a vacuum on his daughters head to make a tight ponytail and the Internet explodes.
What do you think would happen if a mom made a video of herself playing with and cleaning up after her toddler? I’ll tell you what would happen – nothing. No one would find that entertaining. In fact, she would probably be judged for leaving her house a mess. If she made a video of a series of photographs that poke fun at parental neglect – she would be called out on bad parenting for sure. God forbid she use a vacuum to make a ponytail! I can already hear the criticism: How lazy is that? For some reason, it’s just not as funny or entertaining when women fumble around with parenting.
I may sound like I’m bitter about the double standard, but it’s not for the reasons that you may think. I’m just wondering how long it will be until we stop finding fatherhood so “adorable,” and realize that fathers play as big a role in raising a child as mothers do. Every parental feat that they accomplish shouldn’t be viewed as some hilarious novelty. It’s insulting. Isn’t it so cute the way he pays attention to his child! No. It’s not.
