French Teen Girls Will Soon Get Free Birth Control Without Parents Being Any The Wiser & Nobody Cares

shutterstock_113451379Sexually active teenage girls in France, or those who are considering birth control options, have a lot to look forward to in 2013. Starting in the new year, les filles can not only get free birth control but without parental notification. Everybody freak out. Except, no one really is.

NPR reports that the French government is officially on board with non-parent approved birth control (and gratuit at that!) for the sake of reducing teen pregnancy. Plus, the French reportedly want to ensure that all girls, regardless of their socioeconomic status or taboos in their respective families, have access to birth control.

Do note, however, that this new change in policy is only a slight departure from what la France already has going on:

Under current rules, teenagers wanting absolute anonymity with a doctor have to pay for the visit in cash without submitting a claim to get the money back. And birth control is only partially reimbursed by the French state…Under current rules, teenagers wanting absolute anonymity with a doctor have to pay for the visit in cash without submitting a claim to get reimbursed.

The government will also be picking up the tab on that birth control consultation. Meaning that for girls who, for whatever reason, aren’t able to discuss birth control with their families, relying on faulty birth control claims from their ever reliable peers doesn’t have to be an option. Those ladies now have someone else to pose questions to –free of charge! But while the mere conversation surrounding such a policy in the United States resulted in a certain law student being famously called a “slut,” France hasn’t encountered much of a “batttle,” according to NPR.

CLER, a single Catholic organization, does oppose the change in policy. But as far as anyone can hear, no rampant slut-shamey anti-HPV vaccine hysterics regarding free birth control for teen girls.

Viva La France.
