Elizabeth Smart Is Engaged, But Choosing To Keep Her Personal Life Private

Elizabeth SmartElizabeth Smart, a young woman whose life has intrigued the national public after her horrible abduction ten years ago, has announced that she is engaged to be married. The 24 year old ABC News Contributor has chosen to keep the name of her lucky man under wraps, trying to keep her advocacy work in the media separate from her personal life.

It’s understandable that a woman whose spent so much time answering questions and sharing her life’s deepest details would be hesitant to share any more with the press. After all, her traumatic childhood kidnapping  has been made into a bestselling book and a made-for-TV movie.

I can remember the news reports from Elizabeth Smart’s abduction a decade ago. I was just two years older than the Utah teen. I’m pretty sure that my mother slept on the floor outside my bedroom that night. It definitely gave me an earlier curfew and helped my parents implement a buddy system, so that my friends and I would always have one girlfriend with us when we went to parties or get-togethers. The terrifying story held a nation of parents in frightened anxiety.

So now, I feel like we’re all going to have a small celebration to see Smart happy and moving on with her life. Even without the details, simply hearing that Elizabeth is happy and in love makes me smile. It makes me want to send my best wishes and prayers to a woman whom I’ve never met, but feel very close to anyways.

Smart’s father has confirmed his daughter’s pending matrimony and reiterated her desire for privacy to People. “We’re very excited for her,” Ed said Friday. “She told us at home last Saturday. I wasn’t really surprised. They’ve been very happy together. We’re just thrilled. We’re looking forward to her moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life.” He added that Elizabeth, “wants to keep it very private and feels very strongly about that right now.”

It will be interesting to see how Smart’s position with ABC will coincide with her pleas for privacy. I’m sure her employers will be understanding, especially given Smart’s extreme popularity and altruistic motives in her work. I would be a complete liar if I said that I didn’t want to see any pictures of the happy couple. Call me a hypocrite if you must.

Either way, let me speak for the Mommyish team and say that we’d like to offer Elizabeth Smart our congratulations. We’re thrilled for the happy couple and wish them the very best! This extraordinary young lady definitely deserves a lifetime of happiness.
