‘Duct Tape Dad’ Should Be In Jail

facebookFirst of all, can we stop punishing our kids and posting photographic evidence on the Internet? Actually, more importantly, can we stop hitting our kids – modeling violent behavior – and when they inevitably mimic and hit back, can we really not tie them up with duct tape and make it a “joke” on Facebook?

Father-of-the-year Andre Curry, 22, of Chicago thought that all of the above would be a good idea. From what I can gather from his hilarious Facebook post, he hit his 18-month-old daughter, she hit him back, and he seized the opportunity to teach her a lesson about consequences. Well, some would call it “consequences” – others would call it assault and battery. He bound her arms and legs and covered her mouth with duct tape. Then he photographed her and posted the picture to his Facebook account, with the caption: “This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back ; ).”

Haha! Winky face! Isn’t that adorable? Good god, I am losing faith in humanity by the second. I guess we shouldn’t expect much from someone who needs to abbreviate the word “what.” He was arrested in December 2011 and finally convicted in November of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery. He faced up to seven years in prison.

From an ABC News report:

Curry has no prior criminal record and his lawyer convinced the judge to reconsider the felony conviction, dropping the charges to a misdemeanor.

Curry did not testify in his own defense, but his lawyer argued that he was just fooling around and the girl was never in danger.

“To use a child … as a toy or a prop in an odd attempt at humor is conduct of an insulting or provoking nature,” Cook County Circuit Judge Lawrence Flood said in November when Curry was found guilty.

But at today’s sentencing Flood changed his mind, giving Curry a last minute reprieve from prison.

Instead of going to prison, Curry will serve 18 months probation, attend parenting classes, and submit to periodic drug testing. Curry responded to the judge’s leniency by saying, “I would like to thank everybody from the bottom of my heart. I’m very sorry for all of the pain that I put everybody through.” Bullshit. You’re sorry you faced seven years in prison for it. How sorry is someone who takes the time to find duct tape and bind a fidgety two-year-old? How sorry is someone who then takes the time to photograph his two-year-old in such a state, see the photo, put a “joke” next to it, and upload it to Facebook? Those are some disturbing, pre-meditated actions.

I’m glad he feels “sorry” but I wouldn’t have gone as easy on him.
