I’m Sorry, I Call BS On Daniel Day-Lewis’s Kids Having No Idea Their Dad Is An Actor

Daniel Day-LewisListen, I love celebrity attempts at humility as much as the next blogger. I think it’s cute when people who make millions of dollars a year try to pretend that they’re just like us. I even smile at Angeline Jolie‘s poop jokes. But Daniel Day-Lewis recently made a “Acting isn’t such a big deal” quip that I think we might need to call bullshit on. The longtime respected actor recently tried to pretend that his kids didn’t even know that their dad worked in the movie business.

When talking to the Daily Mirror, Day-Lewis tried to play down his star persona at home, saying:

“They didn’t even know what I was doing until a couple of years ago. In fact, my 14-year-old boy was asked what I did and he said, ‘I think he’s in construction’. That’s how much they know!”

That sure sounds like this is just a normal folk family. But it also sounds completely unbelievable. Even if it was a couple years ago, we would be talking about a tween boy who had no idea that his dad was an Oscar winner? A tween boy who never wondered where his father went for months at a time while he was shooting movies or getting into character? A tween boy who never read a magazine or watched television or noticed that the creepy guy in Gangs of New York looked remarkably familiar?

I just don’t buy it! My soon-to-be 5-year-old can tell you what her mother and father do for a living. Kids are normally pretty curious about where their parents go all day long. Not letting your child know that you were starring in movies would take a whole lot of effort and elaborate lying. Is that what Day-Lewis is bragging about?

What’s more, it’s not like Day-Lewis’s wife is just a school teacher sitting at home with the kids, working at a job with normal hours where her kids could come for “Take Your Child To Work Day.” Rebecca Miller, Day-Lewis’s wife and the mother of his two sons, also works in the entertainment industry. She’s written and directed multiple movies in the past decade. Did the kiddos know their mother’s occupation?

I get what the Lincoln actor was trying to do. He wanted to look like just another normal dad. I can respect that. But, “My kids don’t even know I’m an actor…” is pretty ridiculous. Maybe they don’t think that being an actor makes him anything special. Maybe they don’t realize just how popular and revered their good ol’ dad is. But they know his job. and they probably know that people in construction don’t make millions of dollars for a job that takes a couple months to complete.
