Dad Chops Off Teen Daughter’s Hair After Mom Gets Her Highlights For Birthday

Geez, this story is horrible all around. A mom let her teen get highlights in her hair for her 13th birthday. But the girl’s happiness turned to horror when the dad cut his teen’s hair as some sort of payback. There’s clearly so much more to this story, but on the surface, it sounds like an incredibly cruel thing to do to a teenage girl.

Christin Johnson wanted to help her daughter Kelsey celebrate her 13th birthday in a memorable way. So when the teen asked for blonde highlights in her brown hair, she was more than happy to oblige.

In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Christin posted a picture of a smiling Kelsey after she got her hair done. It looked really good! And seemingly appropriate for a newly minted teenager? Christin then dropped her daughter off with the girl’s dad, with whom she shares custody.

But when Kelsey came home a couple of days later, Christin discovered that dad cut his teen’s hair. Her long highlighted locks were gone, replaced by a choppy pixie cut.

The poor girl was too humiliated to even show her face, but you can see the anguish. As much as we try to teach them otherwise, physical appearance can be hugely important to a teen’s self-esteem. It’s particularly vicious to use that to punish either the girl or her mother.

The girl’s father and stepmother allegedly cut the girl’s hair off as punishment for getting highlights. They told her, “Actions have consequences.”

Christin took Kelsey to a local salon, where the staff fitted the young girl with a wig of her choice to wear while her hair grows out.

Again, there is obviously a lot about this story that we don’t know. But regardless of the reasons for the dad and stepmom cutting the girl’s hair, I think we can all agree that there were SEVERAL options that wouldn’t have resulted in damaging this teen’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Shaming your kids is never the answer, and potentially damaging them (and your relationship) over behavior, actions, or custodial disputes is just gross.

The dad and stepmom are firefighters, and both have been suspended from their jobs while an investigation is underway. Wood County Job and Family Services is investigating the incident.
