President Obama Voices His Support For Same-Sex Marriage

obamaIt might not be much of a condolence to North Carolina families who could effectively see their legal status disappear thanks to passage of Amendment One, but the issue of family equality for same-sex couples just got a very important voice of support. In fact, same-sex marriage just got the most important backer in the country when it comes to granting legal rights to US citizens.

President Barack Obama has made history by voicing his support for gay and lesbian couples seeking marriage equality.

In an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, the President said, ”At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Marriage equality has sparked plenty of debate around the country as states seem to be making one step forward and two steps back. While six states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriage, 29 states have constitutional amendments defining marriage between a man and a woman.

North Carolina’s vote put it one step further than its other conservative peers by refusing to acknowledge even civil unions. The effects of that decision could compromise health benefits and the protection of children who belong to same-sex couples.

The fact is that thousands of same-sex couples are raising children in this country. They’re loving parents and they’re facing the challenges and concerns that every other parent faces. And yet, our legal system refuses to recognize these families. Children of same-sex parents have been speaking out at an increasing rate, defending their families and giving a face to this political debate.

These families deserve our support. That’s why it is so inspiring to hear the leader of Free World come out and acknowledge that now is the time for marriage equality. Now is the time for us demand that every man or woman be free to make a commitment to their partner and have it be recognized by the law.

Every family is special and important. It gives hope to hear the President affirm this. Let’s just make sure that this is the beginning of the discussion, and that we use this momentum to help families across the country gain legal recognition and support.
