Elton John Helps Himself To ‘Only Child’ Pity, Says He Wants Another Kid
It’s been 18 months since Elton John became a father and, like many families out there, he and partner David Furnish have babies on the brain. Specifically, he’d like a little brother or sister for Zachary, who was born via surrogate in December 2010. As he tells The Guardian:
“I think it’s difficult to be an only child, and to be an only child of someone famous. I want him to have a sibling so he has someone to be with. I know when he goes to school there’s going to be an awful lot of pressure, and I know he’s going to have people saying, ‘You don’t have a mummy.’ It’s going to happen. We talked about it before we had him. I want someone to be at his side and back him up.”
Elton himself is an only child, and he says he spent most of his childhood alone in his bedroom, listening to music as his parents argued which in part explains why he wants a sib for little Zachary. It’s kind of sweet when you think about it and, in general, Elton’s views on fatherhood are pretty awesome. The entire article portrays him as doting dad a side of Elton John we don’t see written up too often and while I’m always weary that celebs are on their best behavior while being profiled for a major publication, there’s something very endearing about Elton as dad.
He tells The Guardian‘s Alexis Petridis he worries about Zachary being too spoiled not so much by his dads but by their legions of fans. “You know what? At Christmas we bought him a swing for the garden and a little slide, and this was his Christmas present and his birthday present from us,” Elton says. “But he had so many presents from other people throughout the world, which is touching, but we actually found it obscene. I said, ‘This is shocking. It’s four hours we’ve been opening these presents.'” They ended up donating most of it to charity, including at least some of the nine (!) strollers they received at once.
Elton also explains how he no longer feels the need to stay up all night doing drugs. “I’m going to get up in the morning and see my little boy and see my partner. We have a life. You think, ‘How the fuck do you do it?’ but actually, you do. You just manage to do it.” Anyway, the article is definitely worth a read if you’re an Elton fan; sure, it goes into great detail about his career and where he’s at right now but, chances are, you’ll get sucked in by the parenting bits like I did. Because there is something really cool in visualizing such a larger-than-life superstar like Elton John sharing pics of his little boy and offering the details of their bedtime routine with anyone who will listen.
