Bristol Palin Announces That She Is Waiting On Her ‘Slut’ Phone Call Too

Bristol PalinBristol Palin has been called a lot of awful names since her national debut in 2008. From her teen pregnancy to her once upon a time marriage announcement to Levi Johnston to simply being Sarah Palin‘s daughter, the young lady has been a press target for a good chunk of her life. And as a young woman in the public sphere, sexually charged insults don’t evade her as in addition to many attacks on her sexuality, she also had the pleasure of being told her mother was a “whore” by an ardent Palin hater.

Such is the point the young mother makes on her personal blog, citing Sandra Fluke and asking President Obama when she can be expecting her consolatory phone call.

Bristol specifically mentions Bill Maher, known in liberal and conservative circles for his consistent misogynistic jokes, writing:

Your $1,000,000 donor Bill Maher has said reprehensible things about my family.  He’s made fun of my brother because of his Down’s Syndrome. He’s said I was ”f””-d so hard a baby fell out.”  (In a classy move, he did this while his producers put up the cover of my book, which tells about the forgiveness and redemption I’ve found in God after my past very public ”” mistakes.)

If Maher talked about Malia and Sasha that way, you’d return his dirty money and the Secret Service would probably have to restrain you.  After all, I’ve always felt you understood my plight more than most because your mom was a teenager.  That’s why you stood up for me when you were campaigning against Sen. McCain and my mom ”” you said vicious attacks on me should be off limits. [tagbox tag=”slut-shaming”]

She adds that Obama seems “only willing to defend certain women,” meaning liberals, when the opportunity to appeal his base is present, which I don’t doubt in the slightest. Politicians don’t so much as be seen getting off a plane without the intention of appealing to someone, especially in an election year. I’m certain the President, regardless of his intentions, weighed with his aides how such a phone call would be received and reported in the press. All of which would time perfectly well with his attempts to court women voters leading into the 2012 election too.

But regardless of who is getting a phone call or not, this renewed discussion surrounding everyone’s daughters, misogyny, and sexually-charged insults highlights well that this way of viewing and responding to women plagues both sides of the aisle. Self-identified liberal progressive men have uttered such slanderous terminology in response to women they disagree with, as have conservatives clearly. But having said that, “slut” and “prostitute” diatribes shouldn’t be tolerated just because the other side has committed them as well. Despite what the mainstream media chooses to pick up and run with, such as the Sandra Fluke narrative, the feminist blogosphere is keeping everyone in check and keeping score — from Michael Moore to Keith Olbermann to Bill Maher.

True criticisms of this type of slander serve everyone’s daughters, no matter their political affiliation. And even though concerns for women and girls often do get sliced up into political capital, no one should get a free pass for calling Elizabeth Warren a “socialist whore” — and in feminist online discussions, they often don’t.

Bristol Palin most likely won’t get her “slut” phone call from the President just as I won’t, many of the Mommyish readers, and probably even their daughters. These types of derogatory remarks are that pervasive in that there are just too many of us ladies, degraded for our opinion, our clothes, or our political endeavors simply because we are ladies. Even the White House can’t afford a phone bill that high — and that’s the real problem.
