Cheerios Commercial Featuring Interracial Family Gets Trolled Hard By Internet Racists

Screen Shot 2013-05-31 at 3.42.46 PMA Cheerios commercial featuring an adorable interracial family generated such vile, racist rants on the Internet that the comments section on YouTube needed to be shut down. When I see stuff like this just want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.

Most of the time I like to live in a happy bubble. A place where I am totally unaware that there are racist jerks everywhere who would look twice if they saw my family. I’m a Greek/Italian woman breeding with an African American/Laotian man and we will soon have two adorable little mixed-race children. I can’t believe our family dynamic is still in this day-and-age fodder for a lot of hate.

Adweek reports that the comments section was filled with “references to Nazis, “troglodytes” and “racial genocide.” I’m glad the section is down, because sometimes I fall prey to the whole “car wreck” mentality, can’t look away and end up working myself into a fit of rage. You can see that there are so far upwards of 4,000 upvotes for the video and 700 downvotes. Who downvotes an adorable little girl asking about Cheerios and heart health in a commercial that is punctuated by the word, “Love?”

The Reddit thread about the commercial has generated over a thousand comments. Honestly, this is a commercial that I would not have bat an eye at. The fact that corporations are finally seeing that there are many different family dynamics that exist is refreshing. Also – this kind of dynamic is so common, it shouldn’t even be a big deal.

I guess living in big cities my whole life has blinded me to the fact that we all live amongst a bunch of small-minded trolls. Some hate interracial relationships. Some hate same-sex relationships. There will never be a shortage of ignorant jerks who will find these dynamics surprising, disturbing and worthy of being targets of hate and vitriol.
