Britney Spears Would Rather Learn Algebra Than Hire Out Her Son’s Tutoring”
Britney Spears is one of my favorite celebrities because she seems so real. She is flawed like the rest of us and has gone through a lot, so she will always get respect from me. Now, we have a brand-new reason to adore and relate to her. She is taking math classes in order to catch up with her sons so she can help them with their increasingly difficult homework. As the mother of elementary school children navigating Common Core math alongside them, I completely understand where she’s coming from.
In an interview with People, Britney describes the situation with her sons and their math homework:
”They go to a really hard school, and this week we had three hours of homework [a night],” the popstar tells PEOPLE in this week’s at-home cover story. ”Some of it is hard for me. Next year when [Preston’s] in fifth grade, he’s going to be doing pre-algebra, and I’m taking classes so I know how to do it!”
Girl, I totally hear you. My daughter is only in second grade and I know it won’t be long before I’m tapping out on helping her with math and handing it off to my husband, who is much better in that department. The math kids are doing in elementary school these days is not what we did when we were their age, that’s for sure. Math has never been my strong suit in the first place so it stresses me out knowing I won’t be of much help in the coming years with my kids and their homework.
And can we talk about how fantastic it is that Britney is this involved with her kids schooling? We all know she can afford a cadre of private tutors, but she wants to do it herself. I hate to pat a celebrity on the back for doing something that regular parents do, but this is pretty above and beyond even for us Normals and she has been a bazillionaire since about the age of 16, so she’s never known what regular adult life is like in the first place. She is used to getting what she wants and money is never an object. I am highly impressed that she’s taking this on herself and showing her sons that she is invested in their education.
On that note, I would see absolutely nothing wrong with her hiring tutors either! I had one for a few years in high school because my parents weren’t able to explain some math concepts to me well enough and I was struggling. Taking a math class in order to teach me would have been tough for them as they both worked full-time and had three kids to take care of. Obviously, Britney’s schedule can be a bit more flexible, so this is easier for her than a non-rich and famous person. Regardless, I’m glad to see how involved she is with her sons. I know she’s had some personal obstacles in recent years but it looks like she is making her kids a priority and you have to respect that.
