Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced yesterday that they would “step back” from their ‘senior’ roles as members of the Royal Family in order to split their time more evenly between North America (probably Meghan’s native Canada) and the United Kingdom. Almost instantly, the internet was ablaze. While haters like Piers Morgan were critical of the famous duo’s decision, others recognized how the incessant bullying from the British tabloids towards Meghan made this decision the right one for the whole family’s mental wellness.

While there has been some thoughtful critique about Prince Harry and Meghan’s big announcement, people have been able to have some fun with this big news and the best memes of 2020 are starting out with a royal bang. Here are the best reactions.

First, of course, The Royal Fam’s Reaction

We had to start with this one because it becomes pretty clear that the other ‘senior’ members of the Royal Familia didn’t get a heads-up before Harry and Megs hit ‘post’ on their Instagram announcement. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex planned a carefully-written and articulate statement about wanting to give baby Archie Harrison a balanced life, the Royal Communications basically said that they were blindsided, calling discussions “at an early stage.” We have to respect the game.

Alternate Headlines

Some of the best reactions to this royal revelation have been the parodic headlines about the event. When you take away the fact that these people are *royalty*, it becomes pretty obvious that this isn’t exactly groundbreaking news. It’s not lost on the public that Meghan Markle is the first Woman of Color to join the British Royal Family and she hasn’t exactly been welcomed with open arms. British tabloids insist that Meghan has driven a wedge between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry, and that her vicious “feud” with Kate Middleton have made family events completely insufferable. Sure, Prince William is ~*allegedly*~ having an affair with one of Kate’s old friends, but we’re sure it’s Meghan who’s making these family gatherings so uncomfortable.

Unfollowed?!

This is one of the greatest reactions to the royal news mostly because Karen unfollowing Harry and Meghan on Instagram is probably the ideal consequence the Duke and Duchess had in mind. If the worst thing to happen when you ghost your family is some rando named Karen hitting a button on a social media app, you’re probably in a pretty good place. Sure, Karen’s probably not the only one who ~*unfollowed*~ them but @SussexRoyal still has a cool 10.3 million followers on Instagram, it’s NBD.

The relatability!

Hey girl, get yourself OUT of some toxic work environments! This is the advice we’d give to our BFFs, so it’s the exact advice we’re happy that Meghan Markle took. The U.K. was mean to her. If all the customers at the pizza place you worked at were rude to you, wouldn’t you quit? And make your hot coworker quit too? That’s what we thought.

Don’t Knock My Priorities

Yes, we care about all the bullsh*t going on in the world. But is it *so* wrong to be deeply invested in the Royal Family and what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit means for the monarchy? Old establishments must crumble! We’re just staying on top of current events.

We don’t think Meghan Markle will actually be down to join The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills but not going to lie, we’d totally watch. Now that Bravo’s Andy Cohen has given Meg the official invite, we’ll be waiting with bated breath to see if she takes the opportunity!
