Are Two Mommies Better Than One? Just Ask Gwyneth Paltrow

Oh, Gwynnie, how we love to hate you!

Or, wait, do we hate to love you?

After reading the Academy Award-winner’s latest GOOP newsletter, I am embarrassed to admit that it might be the latter. (Please don’t judge!) In it, Gwyneth recounts how her daughter, 7-year-old Apple, came home from school one day saying that a classmate has two mommies. “Two Mommies? How lucky is she?!” was Gwyneth’s response. In the same entry, she  voices her distress at some recent incidents of homophobia across the U.S. and questions what it actually says in the bible that causes people to be so upset by her thinking.

Now, I’m the first to admit that Gwynnie sucks at singing (remember her painful Oscar performance?). And that her recent ad seeking a tutor for her two children was a little, shall we say, out there (you know, the one where she demands that candidates speak at least three languages, play a minimum of two instruments, be well-versed in Greek and Latin, and have a passion for sailing and tennis).

But her support of gay rights is refreshing. It’s not all that surprising but, hey, I’m always happy to see celebs speak out against hatred of any kind. And I love her simple yet powerful response to her daughter’s observations. It speaks volumes about the type of message we should all be sending our children. Make fun of Gwyneth all you want but, hey, she just gained major props in my eyes.
