Americans Hate ‘Gender-Bending’ Baby Names — But Only For Boys

Livescience reported on the most hated baby names in America and it appears that androgynous names, like Madison and Addison, are very unpopular but only when given to little boys. Female Madisons and Addisions are safe from the angry mob, apparently.

It looks like our country has a problem with names that don’t automatically reaffirm a boy’s masculinity, as the co-ed adoption of Madison and Addison can leave many guessing as to the sex of the baby for a few moments — quelle horreur. The fact that much of the US doesn’t take issue with a girl adopting such names speaks to a cultural flexibility for girls that just isn’t there for boys yet. Even for something as basic and fundamental as a first name.
