Amazon Swears Alexa Isn’t Laughing Because She’s Evil, But We’re Not So Sure

If you have an Amazon Echo, then you’re probably quite familiar with Alexa. She’s so helpful! And funny and smart and really, she’s great. Just great. Also, possibly evil? And plotting a takeover of the world, one unsuspecting home at a time? Echo users have reported that Alexa randomly laughs, without prompting or command. Just some creepy, menacing laugh for no reason whatsoever. Amazon says they’re aware of the problem, and have a perfectly innocent explanation for it. But I do not believe them.

Can you even imagine? You’re getting your kids ready for bed or whatever, and Alexa randomly laughs from the other room.

If that happened in my house, you would see a Jayme-sized hole in the wall and dust from my feet running my ass away from that bitch.

There have been several reports over the last week or so of Alexa just laughing at random. Some people say it’s a giggle, while others say it’s far for ominous. I feel like the way she laughs is sort of beside the point? Like, I wouldn’t be more comforted by a sweet little titter of a laugh if it was coming from a fucking robot that I didn’t ask to laugh. THE ROBOT IS LAUGHING ON HER OWN, PEOPLE. The kind of laugh is irrelevant.

Amazon says they are aware of the “issue”, and their explanation is rather innocent. I am suspicious.

A spokesperson for Amazon says, “In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase ‘Alexa, laugh,'”. We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance ‘Alexa, laugh.’ We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to ‘Sure, I can laugh’ followed by laughter.” The company says a fix has already been rolled out.

Sure, Amazon. Suuuuuuure. In the meantime, if your Alexa laughs at you without any command, might I suggest fire? It’s the only way to cleanse the evil.
