The Wii U Isn’t Out Until November And I’m Already Stressed About It

The Wii U will be released in sixty four days and 2 hours. As a mom who is a gamer who has kids who are gamers I want the Wii U. I’m sure the Wii U will be at the top of all my kids Christmas lists and I’ve started scouring the internet for preorder information and discovering that a few outlets are all ready sold out of the $349.99 bundle. And at $349.99 it’s a pricey holiday gift. Especially in this economy. But I can save my pennies and curb my latte habit in order to save up for one. What will we get for $349.99?

From the Wii U website:

The Wii U GamePadâ„¢ controller removes the traditional barriers between you, your games, and your TV by creating a second window into the video game world. It incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen, as well as traditional button controls and two analog sticks.

The GamePad also includes motion control, a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, rumble features, a sensor bar, a stylus, and support for Near Field Communication (NFC). It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and weighs approximately 1.1 pounds.

I have no idea what this means. But it sounds really cool. For those of you who are as technically clueless as I am, some of the things the Wii U will have that make it sound super appealing to a mom who likes to play video games with her kids are:

Backwards Compatibility. For those of us who own a Wii system this means that we can play almost all of our old Wii games on the new system. The Wii balance board is also compatible.

A huge range of video entertainment. Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and Hulu are all developing applications for the Wii U console.

An internet browser. You can use the Wii U GamePad and your home television to surf the internet.

The Nintendo TVii, where you can  find, watch, and engage with TV shows, movies and sports programming, all from the Wii U GamePad.

Plus family fun games like Super Mario Brothers U and Lego City Undercover.

The Wii is a CUTE system. Cute meaning there are so many kid-friendly games and it gets the entire family involved with playing together and for those of you who own the system, you are familiar with how multi-generational it is, everyone from toddlers to grandparents can enjoy playing together and even at the steep price tag, it’s the sort of “toy” your family will get a lot of use of. Now that my kids are getting older I like the idea of getting one large family gift for Christmas rather than a ton of little gifts that will end up with pieces lost and broken and forgotten at the bottom of the toy bin.

But the price tag. At $349.99 it’s expensive. And unless I can get a preorder, the idea of standing in some awful line in the freezing cold at 3 a.m. to purchase one of these is not an idea I can get behind. And that is all ready stressing me out. I will never be one of these parents who leaves the Thanksgiving table to stand in line or camp out waiting for whatever the hot new holiday toy of the season is. I appreciate a bargain as much as the next person but I can’t bring myself to stand out in the cold for it. Until then, I’m debating about whether I need to order now or risk the Wii U selling out before I can get my hands on one. And if I do order early, will I be able to keep it under wraps between release day and Christmas morning.

Are you the type of parent who gets stressed out over the hot holiday toy list? Or are you more the type who waits until the last minute and takes your chances with in-store availability? It’s not even October and I’m already stressing myself out about getting my hands on a Wii U. If I don’t hurry up and order one you guys can laugh at me when I’m suffering through Black Friday and fighting with other parents to nab one.
