A family argument turned into a devastating tragedy this weekend when a Texas mother murdered both of her daughters with a gun, and then was killed by police after refusing to drop her weapon. The girls’ poor father was home at the time, and this whole horrible scene unfolded on his birthday.

According to the New York Daily News, 42-year-old Christy Sheats was “a vocal gun rights advocate.” The devout Christian and alleged responsible gun owner who said she kept a weapon for the protection of her family turned that weapon on her 17- and 22-year-old daughters, Madison and Taylor, during a family argument on their father’s birthday early Friday evening, and killed both of them.

”It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away,” Christy Sheats wrote on her Facebook page in March, according to Buzzfeed, ”but that’s exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semi-automatic handguns.”

The girls reportedly tried to run when their mother pulled her gun on them, but Christy Sheats allegedly shot them both multiple times in the front yard of their Houston home. The older daughter may have been shot inside the house first, prompting everyone to run, but she collapsed and died on the front lawn. Neighbors say they saw the 17-year-old be shot in the back while running from her own mother.

Police came to what news reports are specifying was a nice, middle-class Houston neighborhood. Both girls were lying on the lawn, and the police found Christy Sheats still holding her gun. When she refused to drop it, she was shot and killed by police responding to emergency calls from the neighbors.

Sheats’ husband, Jason, was taken to the hospital, because the poor man was in shock after watching his wife murder his daughters right in front of him.

”He’s going through a very difficult time,” a spokesperson from Sheriff’s department said. The incident reportedly started as a “family argument,” but it is not yet clear what the family was arguing about, or how it escalated to this sort of tragedy.

Police have updated the story with news that police had reportedly been to the Sheats’ home on more than one occasion, allegedly due to incidents related to Mrs. Sheats’ history of mental illness. It’s an unimaginable tragedy for that poor father and the rest of their friends and family.
