The Amount Of Coverage Teenage Celebrities Get On Adult Sites Is Disturbing

shutterstock_119486029Is it just me? Maybe it’s just me. But I really don’t give a rat’s ass who Justin Bieber is dating and why they broke up. Unfortunately, I still know every detail about it because it’s on every news site out there. Well, not every news site. I don’t think I’ve seen it in the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times. But what happened to the days when there were adult gossip rags and teen zines? And the two didn’t intersect? I miss that.

I know what you’re thinking, Why the hell are you bringing him up then? In your story? On a website targeted to actual adults? I don’t know – commiseration? Empathy? A resounding need to talk about something that doesn’t make me burst into tears?

These kids may be richer than God, jet-setting around the world like adults – but they’re teenagers. I find it a little creepy to follow anything that they do. I think it’s Twilight’s fault. Twilight made it okay for grown women to obsess over teenagers. I find that totally disturbing. I know someone who took her daughters to every Twilight midnight premiere. I thought she was just being a rad mom, but it turns out she has a poster of Edward in her room. A grown woman. Her daughters buy her Twilight paraphernalia for Christmas and birthdays. This woman is damn near forty. What gives?

Frankly, if a Lost Boys rerun came on, I would totally watch it. The difference is, I was a fan of this movie when I was a teenager. If it came out now, I probably wouldn’t be standing in line to buy a ticket. Unless my pre-teen step daughter wanted to go. Sites like Twilight Moms confuse the hell out of me. Their tagline is “The Stephanie Meyer Fansite for the rest of us!” Hmm.

Maybe it’s a harmless fascination with youth. I get that. It’s not easy to get older and have to let go of the things that you enjoyed when you were young. I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s ridiculous for me to shop at Forever 21. If my 13-year-old stepdaughter and I are shopping at the same place, I have to believe that one of us is wrong. Right?

Maybe all of this coverage of Justin BieberOne Direction and Twilight is just providing a harmless bridge to youth. But I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing an article about Justin Bieber’s rocky relationship next to one covering an NRA press conference. That’s just weird.
