Teenager Who Refused To Be Weighed For School's BMI Test Should Be Applauded

An Iowa teenager took a stand during a school fitness test that requires students to have their height and weight recorded to compute their BMI. She refused to be weighed, and was sent to the principal’s office. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make young girls stand on scales in front of each other should be publicly shamed. What a horrible concept. More »

If You Need To Attend A 'Reality Party' To Learn Teens Drink, Then You Are A Cyborg

What do teenagers do at parties? Well, I imagine there’s a table with soda and snacks, and perhaps a few board games like Yahtzee and Monopoly. The girls probably sit on the one side of the room while they giggle about who they have crushes on, and the boys are probably on the other side of the room engaging in horseplay. If you are nodding your head in agreement, then you are the type of parent that “reality parties” were designed for. The rest of us are praying our kids don’t do the kind of stuff we did as teens, and that isn’t going on a four-game Yahtzee losing streak. More »

8 Things Every Mother Will Have To 'Let' Her Daughter Do At Some Point

When I found out my first child was a girl, I was a little freaked out. I grew up with brothers and though my gut told me she would be a girl, part of me was sort of hoping I would have all boys because I felt more comfortable with the idea of raising them. One would think that being a woman myself would make me capable but really, it just made me all the more aware of how awkward it can be to raise a girl. More »

5 Kids Died In A Car Crash Last Weekend And Asking 'Where Were The Parents' Isn't Helping Anyone

Even if he had been a licensed driver, he would only be entitled to a California provisional license, which does not allow drivers on the road between 11pm and 5am or allow anyone under 20 years old in the car unless there is a licensed driver 25 or older present. So yes, there were laws broken. Unfortunately, asking “where were the parents?” and ” how did they let this happen?” isn’t going to help anyone now, but it’s still a reaction you will see everywhere when a tragedy like this happens. Your Perception Of Teens Is Way Off – They’re Not Just Texting, They’re Changing the World

Your Perception Of Teens Is Way Off - They're Not Just Texting, They're Changing the World

My students serve the homeless, stock food banks, care for pets in shelters, coach little league, tidy their elderly neighbors’ front lawns, help with public library events. They serve the United Way, volunteer with relocation teams for both pets and people. They spend time at group homes for older, mentally impaired adults who have trouble with simple and or gross motor skills. My students visit senior citizen centers, pre-schools and run races to promote preservation of the environment. They donate and organize for breast cancer research and awareness. They visit the mother of a deceased friend who died of cancer at the age of 13 and would have graduated this year. My students are citizens of this world and they take that seriously. Wouldn’t it be nice if more people took them seriously? More »

This Rent-A-Teen Program Sounds Much Cheaper Than The Real Thing

If you’re thinking about having kids, it might occur to you that at some point, your tiny, precious bundle of joy is going to turn into an enormous, refrigerator-emptying, stinky-sock-producing machine. The post-baby singularity is a big enough life change; it’s hard enough to imagine what it’ll be like to hold a tiny infant in your arms, let alone to picture what your life is going to look like in sixteen years. Fortunately, Kentuckian actor Stanley Robinson is here to help, with his Rent-A-Teenager program for prospective parents. Based on the current expense of clothing, feeding, and otherwise providing for a child, not to mention sending him to college, a rental option sounds like a pretty good option. More »

10 Hilariously Terrible Ways To Talk To Your Kids About Sex

Let’s face it. No parent looks forward to “The Talk.” The birds and the bees have been an uncomfortable rite of passage for parents and teens since the beginning of time, and the information area has only made it worse. In an age where one keystroke can bring up every conceivable type of sexual fetish and flavor known to man, how do you tactfully go about talking to your kids about sex? More »

30 Frat Members To Be Charged In Hazing Death Of 19-Year Old And The Punishment Will Never Be Enough

I don’t know about all of you Mommyish readers, but since I became a mother, I have spent an inordinate amount of time day-dreaming about my children’s futures. I worry, I wonder, I giggle and sometimes, I shudder. Being a youngish mom, I remember my youth very clearly- both the good and the bad. I remember times where I desperately wanted to fit in with a certain group of people and I know I did things to make that happen that would have made my mom cry. More »
