Annie Lennox is forever the coolest because she has the nerve to call out the slew of trashy, hyper-sexualized, degrading music videos that have come out recently on her Facebook page. More
The Monster High dolls may looks different than other fashion dolls, but from the messages they represent in their movies I feel like even though one of them has yet to be portrayed as a female president or astronaut, they are an overall good role model for my daughter. More
This past weekend, my mother-in-law and I made our annual trip to the department store with my daughter in tow, ready to pick out the perfect Easter Dress. I knew that it was going to be difficult to balance my conservative MIL’s love of traditional, girly modesty and my daughter’s love of anything a girl in a Disney sitcom might wear. I was prepared to play moderator between the two extremes. But I had no idea just how awful the “kiddie fashion” was for Easter dresses. More
Seriously people. This is why we cannot have nice things. The country is freaking out today because Chicago schools have approved a sex ed curriculum that begins in kindergarten and continues on through each grade. Mommy blogs are freaking out. Conservative outlets are rushing to condemn the program. Everyone’s gasping, “Sex Ed In Kindergarten!” with looks of shock and horror on their faces. And they’re all completely missing the details of the program and why it’s so important. More
This Valentine’s Day, my 5-year-old daughter will be the one going on a super romantic date with her kindergarten boyfriend. And as her mother, I have absolutely no problem with it. More
Like millions of families across the country, we tuned in to the Superbowl last night. We wanted to see the commercials and Beyonce and cheer on Bernard Pollard, one of our hometown high school football heroes who just won a Superbowl ring with the Baltimore Ravens. So my parents, my daughter and I grabbed some junk food and plopped down on the couch for a little of America’s favorite past time. Unfortunately, I spent as much time covering my five-year-old’s eyes from overly sexualized images as I did actually cheering on the teams. More
Well, this sounds like a completely healthy father-daughter relationship to me, but I’d like to hear what you all think about it. More
Oh yay! Just what our Friday needed. Another nude photo scandal involving Kate Middleton. More
In what was obviously a private moment at a private home between a private couple, (are we catching the drift here?) Kate Middleton decided to sunbath topless while vacationing in France. She wasn’t doing anything scandalous. She was lying around on a balcony with her husband Prince William. Now that photos of that moment have surfaced, we should be shaming the tabloid culture that invades every private moment, not Duchess Catherine. More
It is a shocking image. It’s one that literally made my draw drop and my mouth hang open like a surprised child. It’s the image of First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, photoshopped onto a famous topless painting on the cover of a Spanish magazine. Michelle’s face is placed on to “Portrait d’une negresse,” a work by Marie-Guillemine Benoist, which originally depicted a slave with her breast exposed. More
Uma Thurman is a 42-year-old mother of three and an undeniably successful actress. She just finished up a stint on the new drama Smash and she has multiple movies in the works according to IMDB. Her A-list status is firmly in place, and one would imagine that the statuesque beauty feels content in her own skin.
But recently, Thurman opened up about her confidence as she grew older, but also about being thrust into very mature and sexualized roles at a young age. More
Justin Beiber appears on the August cover of Rolling Stone, who chose to describe the teen idol as “HOT, READY, LEGAL.” Way to keep it classy, guys. More
My colleagues are pretty horrified that tween girls are getting primped – bikini wax and all – before heading off to summer camp. But I’m not. In fact, I’d argue just the opposite: It’s more detrimental for a swimsuit-clad 12-year-old to sport a hairy bikini line than it is for her to get waxed, plain and simple. More
My daughter has entered the realm of birthday parties. Whether it’s girls from dance class, classmates from pre-school or family friends she’s been playing with for years, everyone is having a birthday party. And we’re always invited.
Personally, I like birthday parties, whether we’re throwing them or attending them. Maybe I’m just odd, but celebrations always bring a smile to my face. I’ve almost never turned down a birthday invitation. Until, of course, we got invited to a birthday dinner at Hooters. More
