Anonymous Mom: I’m Raising My Son Catholic But We’re Not Ignorant Bible-Thumpers

Anonymous Mom: I’m Raising My Son Catholic But We’re Not Ignorant Bible-Thumpers

My husband and I both grew up in families that regularly attended church, but our attendance waned as we got older. By the time we met, neither of us had attended church in years. We decided that if we were going to raise a family, it was important that we start going to church again. Two weeks after we got married, we found a church and have gone almost every Sunday since. Atheist Mom From Wolf Blitzer Interview Is My New Hero

Atheist Mom From Wolf Blitzer Interview Is My New Hero

Like most of America I have been horror-struck, watching the news footage of the terrifying events that took place in Moore, Oklahoma.  I’ve seen dozens of interviews in the past few days, but one in particular stuck out yesterday. Wolf Blitzer was interviewing Rebecca Vitsmun, a young mom who narrowly survived by fleeing her home moments before the tornado struck with her 19-month-old son in tow. It was a typical survivor interview right up until Blitzer asked the magic question. More »

The New Pope Believes He Is The Authority On How Children Should Be Raised And Educated

The white smoke had come and gone and a new pope is among us. The Vatican has chosen Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina. And although he’s not in favor of  ”Kills the Gays” legislation like a contender (points!), he is predictably in line with the whole children need a mother and a father line of thought. Not a big shocker by any means. More »

Baby Blues: I’m Atheist, But I Might Start Believing To Get Through PPD

Sometimes I wonder if I’d be able to cope with depression better if I still believed in God. I’ve even thought about just hanging up this exhausting atheist thing in favor of doing the “easy” thing. I live in the Bible Belt. It’s really hard not to be on the defensive when most people around you can’t imagine an alternative to Jesus. More »

The Hypothetical New Pope Might Actually Be More Gay-Hatey Than The Old Pope

The Hypothetical New Pope Might Actually Be More Gay-Hatey Than The Old Pope

Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down from his pope-ly duties, his reign marked by gay marriage hating, gay marriage hating, and the occasional IVF slamming. But one of the reported “frontrunners” has gone so far as to defend vehemently anti-gay legislation. Forget banning gay kids from prom. One of the cardinals reportedly being considered as the new pope has backed that famous ”Kill the Gays” Uganda bill. Jesus loves the little children! And their same-sex parents and family members! Some Awesome Loving Midwest Christians Want A Separate Prom That Bans Gay Students

Some Awesome Loving Midwest Christians Want A Separate Prom That Bans Gay Students

It’s February which means prom fever is soon upon us. Time for lots of talk about “appropriate” dresses, limos, drunk driving reminders, and parents hand-wringing about prom night antics. But for some of the parents and teens of Sullivan, Indiana, prom talk includes figuring out a way to ban gay kids from Sullivan High School’s prom. To each their bigoted own! More »

I’m Not Religious, But I’m Considering Faking It For My Daughter

I’m Not Religious, But I’m Considering Faking It For My Daughter

My little girl has been to mass on holidays and sat through a few sermons at my grandmother’s small, rural Brethren church. She’s gone to religious pre-schools and she has memorized a prayer to say before eating dinner. This is the extent of her religious exposure. And I feel like it’s time to change that, to introduce her to the loving and supportive communities that church can provide. There’s just one small problem. My husband and I are not remotely religious. I don’t even think we count as spiritual. More »
