Hey! Your kid is turning 12 or eight or seven months or whatever, and you’d like a fresh idea for his birthday cake, wouldn’t you? Nothing says, “I love you baby!” better than an instrument of death, made from fondant or delicious frosting and plastered on a cake. More
A picture of a six-month-old baby girl holding a rifle in a gun shop is causing quite a stir on social media, as you can imagine. The photo was taken by her father at Woodbridge Firearms Trading Post in Connecticut. More
I don’t let my kids canvas door to door, whether it’s for a school fundraiser or for a extracurricular one. It scares me to death, I don’t like bothering my neighbors, and I would rather help them sell items to people we know personally. But I’m the mom who will basically buy anything from any kid who comes to my door, or who I encounter at a booth outside my supermarket selling something for school. Especially Girl Scout cookies, because I think most people love Girl Scout cookies, and what scouting means to so many girls. More
I knew Diane Sawyer’s special on kids and guns that aired Friday night was going to disturb me. I’m really afraid of guns and the thought of having one in a house with kids terrifies me. I just didn’t realize what was going to disturb me most of all – that gun-owning parents seem to have an unrelenting faith that their kids either don’t know where their guns are, or have no interest. Wrong. More
What do we do with results of a study like this? If you’re a gun owner, I’m going to guess that you are going to think of all the reasons to believe that although a sweeping meta-analysis proves you are not safer with guns in the home – your family is an exception. More
I love a good old fashioned Internet freakout, and this was comes to us courtesy of teen mom reality star MacKenzie Douthit McKee who posted a photograph on Instagram of her, her husband, and her two-year-old son posing with a gutted deer More
Anyway, as I have said before, I know there are many responsible gun owners out there who will be as appalled by this story as the rest of us. A mom in St. Peters, Missouri is facing multiple counts of child abuse after police arrived at her home because neighbors complained they witnessed her 22-month-old baby tied to her garage. With a rope. You know, like you would do with a dog if you were a super abusive pet owner. More
The NRA never fails to sound more and more batty. Back when all of us were newly mourning the horrific tragedies in Newtown, the organization was making proclamations that there should be an armed guard at every school. The statement spurred a variety of reactions, but I have exactly one in response to 8-year-old Josh Welch getting a lifetime NRA membership: WTF. More
A moment of mourning for a 2-year-old little girl who was fatally wounded by her 5-year-old brother. While children accidently shooting one another is a unfortunately a recurring story, this little boy wasn’t tinkering with his parents’ unattended firearm collection. Not in the least. This kid had a rifle of his very own, designed specifically for kids. Record scratch. More

Janay McFarlane was visiting her family and friends in North Chicago. She was 18 years old, walking down the street, when she was shot in the head. Just hours earlier, her 14-year-old sister Destini attended President Obama‘s Chicago gun control speech. Â Now, Destini’s sister is dead and Janay’s three-month-old son is motherless, all due to the city’s horrible epidemic of gun violence. More
A New Jersey school board is inching towards getting one of those “good guy[s] with a gun” — as the NRA famously said — in one of their schools. And by inching, I mean the Passaic Valley Regional School Board voted 8-0 on the first vote. So I guess here comes the “good guys” with guns — provided that the second vote mimics the first.
Just another Thursday here at the Mommyish offices as each and every day we bring you the latest in shootings that are becoming a more or less daily occurrence in our great nation. Today’s horror and tragedy comes from Atlanta, Georgia where a 14-year-old kid was shot in the head at his middle school. More
Has our country really come to this? The debate over gun control has gotten so vitriolic and divisive that we’re now heckling parents who lost young children in mass shootings? I am quite simply astonished that anyone, no matter how they feel about the Second Amendment, could stoop so low. More
This is the first year that my son walks to and from school by himself and spends several hours alone at a time before I get back from work. Before we started this new schedule, I was pretty sure that I would be frantically worried if he failed to answer one of my text messages promptly or was late getting to a friend’s house. I mean, we live in New York City, anything can happen, right? But instead, I’ve found that not only do I not have any anxiety over it, I don’t worry at all. More
