School Shootings Are A Danger, Not A Tragedy

School Shootings Are A Danger, Not A Tragedy

There is a refrain that has been running through my head: If I choose not to use a car seat, and my son severs his spine in a car crash, I cannot be surprised. If I choose to allow my daughter to ride a bike without a helmet, and she cracks her head on the pavement, I cannot be surprised. If I choose to send my children to school in America, and a school shooting takes place—if my son is shot, or his friend is shot, or his teacher is shot as she shields him and his friend with her body—I cannot be surprised. I don’t know what to do when I reach the end of this refrain. More »

Father Shoots Teen Boy Found In Daughter’s Bedroom And This Wasn’t Self-Defense, It Was Bad Judgment

Father Shoots Teen Boy Found In Daughter's Bedroom And This Wasn't Self-Defense, It Was Bad Judgment

A father was awakened by one of his four children (and in the home there was a kid as young as four-years-old) alerting him to the fact there was a man in the house, in the 16-year-old daughter’s bedroom. The father, who is confined to a wheelchair, crawled to his daughter’s room and confronted Johran, who was hiding under the bed.

You guys see where this is going right?

What Happened To This Girl Scout While Selling Cookies Will Infuriate You

What Happened To This Girl Scout While Selling Cookies Will Infuriate You

I don’t let my kids canvas door to door, whether it’s for a school fundraiser or for a extracurricular one. It scares me to death, I don’t like bothering my neighbors, and I would rather help them sell items to people we know personally. But I’m the mom who will basically buy anything from any kid who comes to my door, or who I encounter at a booth outside my supermarket selling something for school. Especially Girl Scout cookies, because I think most people love Girl Scout cookies, and what scouting means to so many girls. More »

When It Comes To Guns In The Home, Parents Put Way Too Much Faith In Their Kids

When It Comes To Guns In The Home, Parents Put Way Too Much Faith In Their Kids

I knew Diane Sawyer’s special on kids and guns that aired Friday night was going to disturb me. I’m really afraid of guns and the thought of having one in a house with kids terrifies me. I just didn’t realize what was going to disturb me most of all – that gun-owning parents seem to have an unrelenting faith that their kids either don’t know where their guns are, or have no interest. Wrong. More »

Mayhaps The Most Irresponsible Gun Owner Ever Leaves Loaded Rifle In Baby’s Crib

Mayhaps The Most Irresponsible Gun Owner Ever Leaves Loaded Rifle In Baby's Crib

Anyway, as I have said before, I know there are many responsible gun owners out there who will be as appalled by this story as the rest of us. A mom in St. Peters, Missouri is facing multiple counts of child abuse after police arrived at her home because neighbors complained they witnessed her 22-month-old baby tied to her garage. With a rope. You know, like you would do with a dog if you were a super abusive pet owner. More »

NRA Gifts 8-Year-Old A Lifetime Membership Because That’s Exactly What An 8-Year-Old Needs

NRA Gifts 8-Year-Old A Lifetime Membership Because That's Exactly What An 8-Year-Old Needs

The NRA never fails to sound more and more batty. Back when all of us were newly mourning the horrific tragedies in Newtown, the organization was making proclamations that there should be an armed guard at every school. The statement spurred a variety of reactions, but I have exactly one in response to 8-year-old Josh Welch getting a lifetime NRA membership: WTF. More »

5-Year-Old Accidently Kills His 2-Year-Old Sister With His Own Patented Kiddie Rifle

5-Year-Old Accidently Kills His 2-Year-Old Sister With His Own Patented Kiddie Rifle

A moment of mourning for a 2-year-old little girl who was fatally wounded by her 5-year-old brother. While children accidently shooting one another is a unfortunately a recurring story, this little boy wasn’t tinkering with his parents’ unattended firearm collection. Not in the least. This kid had a rifle of his very own, designed specifically for kids. Record scratch. More »
