Gender-neutral — or gender-permissive — parenting is a controversial topic in modern parenting circles. Many parents may not be all about stocking their little boy’s closet full of skirts or dressing their girl up like Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, but if we’re really going to be truthful to definitions on this hotly debated parenting trend — many of us our guilty. And helping your daughter win a math prize or compete in a sports tournament are hardly grounds to deduct parental points. More

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt was spotted out with her brothers looking like one of the boys, tabloids scrambled all over one another wondered what insight this gave us into how Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were raising their little girl. It would have to be gender-neutral right? It couldn’t just be that the kid has an affinity for short hair and tennis shoes.
Add another little girl in the limelight to that list, as Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith‘s daughter, just shaved her head. More

Close friendships for girls are pretty culturally acceptable. From kindergarten through high school to well into adulthood, girls who seek constant companionship with one another are not considered anything out of the ordinary. But as boys get into their teens, their attachments to one another are stigmatized as their close bonds culturally put their male relationships in close proximity to homosexuality. While the judgement from narrow-minded peers and hallway gossip may be out of parents’ grasps, Dr. Niobe Way, author of Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendships and the Crisis of Connection, points out that parents unintentionally contribute to emotionally isolating their sons by stereotyping them. The Lawrence King murder is back in the press again as the trial began only last week. For those of you who don’t remember, 15-year-old Lawrence King was shot point blank in front of his entire computer lab class by 14-year-old Brandon McInerney. King was often teased and bullied by his classmates for being gay and so how did he defend himself against such hallway torment? By flirting with his bullies. That alone apparently was the reason for McInerney shooting the boy. His lawyer is now claiming that King’s actions constitute sexual harassment. More

So don’t bother walking your son into McDonalds without taking a gander at this sign. “Boy toys” i.e. anything that is not pink or covered in glitter is currently out of stock.
Guess your son will have to endure the shame of playing with a fairy or a princess. So sorry for the (gendered) inconvenience!
