According to reports, Audrie knew her attackers since middle school. These boys were her friends. The took at least one photo of her attack and sent it to at least ten people. Two days before Audrie killed herself she witnessed one of the boys in the school hallway, huddled around his cell phone, showing something to other classmates and laughing. I think they were just being stupid, as teen girls sometimes do. Maybe their parents never talked to them about the proper attitude of sympathy and support for rape victims. Mark Cole, who said he observed and shot video of one of the defendants inserting his fingers in Jane Doe in the back of his car but later deleted the video and Anthony Craig and Evan Westlake, who both testified they saw sexual acts being performed on the victim. I will say this from a mother’s perspective: if there was a situation where I lived like the one in Steubenville I would welcome the media attention and protests, because as a parent I would want people trying to vocalize their dislike against rape and the sexual victimization of others. I would want to know that there are strangers in this world willing to drive for hours and spend their hard-earned money on gas and stand out in the freezing cold to speak out against rape. I would appreciate writers and bloggers and journalists covering the story because I have young kids, and I don’t want any of them to ever be raped or to rape anyone else. As a mom and a woman and as a human, I cannot understand creating a petition to silence those who object to something as soul-destroying and horrid as rape. Local residents have been invited to speak, but so far only members affiliated with Anonymous have taken the mic. Currently a woman is peaking of a past rape but due to the wind it’s difficult to make out everything she is saying. Protesters are attempting to shield the speaker. The majority of sentiments expressed by the speakers thus far are about stopping violence against women and demands for ending the rape culture prevalent all over the world. Recently various sources released the probable cause transcripts in the court case involving the alleged rape that took place in Steubenville, Ohio during parties that were held at various locations on August 11th. I won’t link or post the transcripts here, because they name the underage victim in the case and I just don’t feel right about that. The transcripts are public knowledge, but I feel this girl has been victimized enough. I’ve read the transcripts myself, and even though they incidents describe no actual penis-to-vagina penetration, what they do describe is rape. And even though there are many individuals who want to argue this point with me, I stand by my belief that an unconscious individual cannot give consent to a sexual encounter. Hence, I will continue to use the word “rape” – because that is exactly what it is. More
