I Have No Problem With Nude & Pregnant Sienna Miller, But Let’s Not Act Like It’s A Big Deal
This morning, I saw some headline excited about a nude and pregnant Sienna Miller. I rolled my eyes and scrolled on by. It wasn’t because I dislike Sienna Miller. She seems nice enough. It wasn’t because I have an issue with nudity. I’ve been known to walk around my house topless, whether I’m home alone or not. I rolled my eyes because this whole naked pregnancy portrait thing has been done to death! We get it, guys. You still have boobs and great legs even while carrying what looks like a 20-pound tumor on your abdomen.
Finally after seeing the news on multiple sights, I gave in to temptation and clicked to find a fully nude, completely unsurprising picture of Sienna Miller. The painting is really well done and interesting. She’s not even crossing her legs and covering her nipples. She’s just all right there for everyone to see. Yay Sienna!
But the most noteworthy thing about this painting is the artist’s description of it. Jonathon Yeo explained his piece by saying:
“It has been 22 years since a pregnant Demi Moore caused uproar by posing for Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Vanity Fair. In that time society has become almost completely desensitized to the daily exposure to people who have surgically distorted their appearance for artificial reasons. Yet certain sections of society are still uncomfortable with the appearance of pregnancy and images of naked expectant mothers are rarely seen.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s hold up on that last bit. “Images of naked expectant mothers are rarely seen”? Where has this guy been?
Naked pregnancy portraits are a celebrity rite of passage nowadays. We recently had Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, and Nia Long all pose on magazine covers while nude and carrying around a plus one. Pop stars Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears did naked preggo shots while carrying their little ones. And let’s not even get started on the supermodels. I’ve seen Miranda Kerr, Alessandria Ambrosio, and more stripping down while with child. Adriana Lima even made it into the Pirelli calendar while she was pregnant.
We see naked pregnant women absolutely all the time. Sure, Demi Moore was the first and most exciting example, but the practice has gotten more and more mainstream since there. So while Sienna’s turn as the naked pregnant lady is nice, it is by no means extraordinary or even surprising.
In general, the over-exposure of celebrity pregnancy is pretty old hat. If you really want to be on trend in Hollywood, you’ll have a completely low-key pregnancy where you never confirm the news, you never give interviews and you wait months before even sharing your child’s name. Silence is really the most shocking thing a celebrity can try. Stripping down and showing off your baby bump is standard fair.
