Rick Santorum Admirably Dropping Out Of Presidential Race For Fatherhood

Rick SantorumRick Santorum‘s little girl Bella, only three years old, has had a tough time of it recently. The toddler, who has a rare genetic disorder called Trisomy 18, nearly died some time ago fighting for her life after coming down with pneumonia. And now that the presidential hopeful’s daughter has come out the hospital a second time, he has officially suspended his campaign — or rather, is dropping out completely.

The Los Angeles Times reports that his announcement was delivered mere hours after Bella was released from the hospital, with The Washington Post adding that his daughter’s compromised health has caused him to reconsider the campaign trail. He described Bella as “a fighter” offering that she was “doing extraordinarily well.”

The Boston Herald wrote that the Santorum family made the decision over the Easter weekend, and that Rick specifically cited his responsibilities as a parent in the announcement:

”We were very concerned about our role being the best parents we possibly could to our children.”

The delicate wording of “suspension” rather than “dropping out, thanks” apparently allows Santorum the opportunity to accrue more funds to pay off his campaign debts.

Although Santorum was a noted controversial political figure, spurring more archaic dialogues about contraception access for women, doubling down on anti-LGBTQ legislation, and even evading the simple questions of high school kids, leaving a prominent presidential platform for your ailing daughter is beyond admirable. In fact, compared to what other political families are up to behind closed doors, ending a presidential bid in the name of parenthood reads as strikingly moral in an occupation where morality is often manipulated to fit on a bumper sticker.
