The Price Is Right Had To Pay One Model $775,000 After Horrible Pregnancy Discrimination

The Price Is RightWell, here’s a Price Is Right showdown that didn’t go quite like the game show wanted. One of the program’s models just won a lawsuit against The Price Is Right for wrongful termination and cruel treatment. She’s already been awarded $775,000 and there’s a chance she’ll be getting more. And after reading how horrible the show treated this woman during her pregnancy, I think you’ll join me in saying, “Good for you, lady!”

Brandi Cochran is a former Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and one of “Barker’s Beauties” from 2002-2009. In 2007, she found out that she was expecting. The model was terrified of notifying her bosses, believing that she would be fired. She eventually miscarried that pregnancy. When she informed the bosses of her loss, one of the producers told her that it was “nature’s way of getting rid of a bad baby.”

A little while later, Cochran found herself pregnant again. This time, she let her employers know right away, only to be greeted with insults like “wide load.” More complications led to the model taking disability leave. At that point, Cochran says she was fired from her job while taking time off.

Cochran filed her lawsuit against the game show in 2010 and was just awarded $775,000 from a jury. However, The Price Is Right is still sticking by the producers implicated in the suit and claiming that they didn’t do anything wrong. A rep for the company that produces the show said the verdict was “the result of a flawed process” — claiming the court “refused to allow the jury to hear and consider that 40% of our models have been pregnant and other important evidence to our defense.” He further added, “We expect to be fully vindicated after the matter has been reviewed and stand behind executive producer Mike Richards and the staff of ‘The Price is Right.'”

The history of poor treatment and sexual harassment that occurred on The Price Is Right somehow makes me question the honesty and integrity of the production company. It hasn’t been a secret for a long time that Bob Barker‘s models had to put up with an extremely misogynistic workplace. So am I shocked to hear that the same show treated a pregnant woman horribly? No, not at all.

I’m glad that Cochran won her lawsuit. I think she deserves to be compensated for enduring such treatment and losing her job for taking disability leave. I can’t imagine going through something as emotional and heartbreaking as a miscarriage without a supportive employer.

This case just proves that the problem wasn’t only with the game show’s legendary former host. Obviously, they still haven’t figured out how to treat women respectfully, no matter who is holding the magic-wand-like mic.
